Using microelectromechanical systems and diffraction grating technologies, a novel tunable chromatic dispersion compensator for multichannel wavelength-division-multiplexing signals was developed. Independent channel-by-channel dispersion tuning with flat top loss spectra was experimentally confirmed.

3.2 Tb/s (160/spl times/20 Gb/s) RZ signals were transmitted over 1500 km precisely-flattened dispersion managed line with the use of newly developed 64 nm hybrid amplifiers. This is the first demonstration of multi terabit/s, long distance transmission.

A multi-core fiber fan-out composed of a GRIN-lens and a micro-lens array has been proposed. A seven-core fan-out was fabricated and confirmed the coupling loss between the fan-out and SM-fiber agreed with the optical design.

Summary form only given. In summary, we have examined thermal decay of fibre Bragg gratings (FBG) for wide temperature and time range. Decay fitted well to a simple power law, and temperature dependence of decay suggests that the accelerated aging condition can be used to test for long-term reliability. This analysis is simpler than previous models and useful for decay estimation.

The poor heat resistant properties of a transparent thermoplastic resin was improved by electron beam irradiation cross-linking. A correcting aspheric lens for a 635-nm laser diode was fabricated using an injection molding machine, and was irradiated with an electron beam. The near field pattern (NFP), the far field pattern (FFP) at the focus position and the transmittance of the lens did not change after exposure to a 260 °C reflow process for 60 s.

Using MEMS and diffraction grating technologies, a novel tunable chromatic dispersion compensator for multichannel WDM signals was developed. Independent channel-by-channel dispersion tuning with flat top loss spectra was experimentally confirmed.

We successfully developed reflowable thermoplastic optical lens module by electron beam cross-linking and fabricated MM-based 10-Gbit/s optical transmitter unit. Experimental result shows good durability for reflow process up to 260 °C.

We propose a novel configuration of ultra-compact 1310/1490/1550-nm WDM filter arrays compounded of a thin-film filter and two planar lightwave circuits. By using simple assembly techniques to optimize the arrangement, the insertion loss less than 0.7 dB is successfully achieved.
