We study the constraints of crossing symmetry and unitarity in general 3D conformal field theories. In doing so we derive new results for conformal blocks appearing in four-point functions of scalars and present an efficient method for their computation in arbitrary space-time dimension. Comparing the resulting bounds on operator dimensions and product-expansion coefficients in 3D to known results, we find that the 3D Ising model lies at a corner point on the boundary of the allowed parameter space. We also derive general upper bounds on the dimensions of higher spin operators, relevant in the context of theories with weakly broken higher spin symmetries.

We study the properties of the holographic CFT dual to Gauss-Bonnet gravity in general D(≥ 5) dimensions. We establish the AdS/CFT dictionary and in particular relate the couplings of the gravitational theory to the universal couplings arising in correlators of the stress tensor of the dual CFT. This allows us to examine constraints on the gravitational couplings by demanding consistency of the CFT. In particular, one can demand positive energy fluxes in scattering processes or the causal propagation of fluctuations. We also examine the holographic hydrodynamics, commenting on the shear viscosity as well as the relaxation time. The latter allows us to consider causality constraints arising from the second-order truncated theory of hydrodynamics.

We consider five-dimensional gravity coupled to a negative cosmological constant and a single U(1) gauge field, including a general set of four-derivative interactions. In this framework, we construct charged planar AdS black hole solutions perturbatively and consider the thermal and hydrodynamic properties of the plasma in the dual CFT. In particular, we calculate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density and argue that the violation of the KSS bound is enhanced in the presence of a chemical potential. We also compute the electrical conductivity and comment on various conjectured bounds related to this coefficient.

Quasi-topological gravity is a new gravitational theory including curvaturecubed interactions and for which exact black hole solutions were constructed. In a holographic framework, classical quasi-topological gravity can be thought to be dual to the large Nc limit of some non-supersymmetric but conformal gauge theory. We establish various elements of the AdS/CFT dictionary for this duality. This allows us to infer physical constraints on the couplings in the gravitational theory. Further we use holography to investigate hydrodynamic aspects of the dual gauge theory. In particular, we find that the minimum value of the shear-viscosity-to-entropy-density ratio for this model is η/s ≃ 0.4140/(4π).

We investigate the use of the embedding formalism and the Mellin transform in the calculation of tree-level conformal correlation functions in AdS/CFT. We evaluate 5-and 6-point Mellin amplitudes in ϕ3 theory and even a 12-pt diagram in ϕ4 theory, enabling us to conjecture a set of Feynman rules for scalar Mellin amplitudes. The general vertices are given in terms of Lauricella generalized hypergeometric functions. We also show how to use the same combination of Mellin transform and embedding formalism for amplitudes involving fields with spin. The complicated tensor structures which usually arise can be written as certain operators acting as projectors on much simpler index structures - essentially the same ones appearing in a flat space amplitude. Using these methods we are able to evaluate a four-point current diagram with current exchange in Yang-Mills theory.

We study the conformal bootstrap in fractional space-time dimensions, obtaining rigorous bounds on operator dimensions. Our results show strong evidence that there is a family of unitary conformal field theories connecting the 2D Ising model, the 3D Ising model, and the free scalar theory in 4D. We give numerical predictions for the leading operator dimensions and central charge in this family at different values of D and compare these to calculations of ϕ4 theory in the ϵ expansion.

A bstractWe study the constraints imposed by superconformal symmetry, crossing symmetry, and unitarity for theories with four supercharges in spacetime dimension 2 ≤ d ≤ 4. We show how superconformal algebras with four Poincaré supercharges can be treated in a formalism applicable to any, in principle continuous, value of d and use this to construct the superconformal blocks for any d ≤ 4. We then use numerical bootstrap techniques to derive upper bounds on the conformal dimension of the first unprotected operator appearing in the OPE of a chiral and an anti-chiral superconformal primary. We obtain an intriguing structure of three distinct kinks. We argue that one of the kinks smoothly interpolates between the d = 2, N=2,2
