Innovation, Knowledge, Judgement and Decision Making as Virtuous Cycles

Mercedes Grijalvo; Miguel Palacios; Carla Martinez-Climent

Globalization of the economy has forced managers to develop new ways of thinking, acting, and managing. Managers must adopt practices that allow their organizations to survive and compete sustainably in a globalized world (Crook, 2001). Institutional change has highlighted the need to address essential adjustments to business strategies and the work that is carried out by companies (Seo & Creed, 2002). In this context, acquiring and sharing knowledge minimize risk and uncertainty (Vahlne & Johanson, 2013). This special issue consists of seven articles that examine different issues. These articles aim to build synergies at all three levels of the organization. At the micro or individual level, these articles frame problems in different ways and then develop new solutions. At the meso or organizational level, they offer designs for new organizational templates. And at the macro or social level, they show how organizations can work to legitimate new practices. These seven articles were selected from the papers that were presented at the 7th Global Innovation and Knowledge Academy (GIKA) Annual Conference, held in Lisbon from June 28 to June 30, 2017. In the first article, “Identifying Customer Needs through Knowledge Sharing in Inter-Firm Relationships,” Bhatti explores how learning takes place in a suppliercustomer relationship and how acquired knowledge contributes to firm processes for value cocreation through offerings. The study shows how managers can prioritize value appropriation opportunities via sense making of acquired knowledge and align the value-creation strategy to a given environment. The article, based on case studies of four multinational firms, has valuable managerial implications for firms and executives. In the second article, “Consumer Behavior in the Disposal of Products: Forty Years of Research,” Cruz-C ardenas and Ar evalo-Ch avez present a 62-article review of consumer behavior in the disposal of products. The article has implications for consumer well-being and, by extension, for businesses, society, and the environment. The authors categorize prior studies into four groups and affirm that most research has been performed in countries with similar cultures. Most studies have
