Stimulation effects provided to drivers by fragrance presentation considering olfactory adaptation

Hironori Funato; Masato Yoshikawa; Mikiko Kawasumi; Shin Yamamoto; Muneo Yamada; Yasuyuki Yanagida

Methods of presenting fragrances have been proposed as a means of preventing drivers from dozing and helping them remain alert. However, the stimulation effects of fragrances and their durations have yet to be evaluated sufficiently. In addition, it is necessary to consider the decrease in sensitivity that results as the driver adapts to a fragrance. We examined fragrance presentation techniques for drivers and constructed a system that simulates an actual vehicle cabin. We then tested the stimulation effects of a fragrance presentation on drivers and its effective duration. We found that intermittent presentation of the fragrance was effective in keeping a driver alert.

Displaying method in on-board display- route guidance method based on sex differences

M. Kawai; Mikiko Kawasumi; Tomoaki Nakano; Shin Yamamoto

The goal of this paper is to examine sex differences in the spatial cognition, and to suggest a displaying method in an on-board display for women. We investigated frequency of cognitive map items used by women. We found that women tend to use landmarks frequently.

Analysis and evaluation of facial expression and perceived age for designing automotive frontal views

Takayuki Fujiwara; Mikiko Kawasumi; Hiroyasu Koshimizu

We propose a method for quantifying the design of automotive frontal view based on the research on the human visual impression to the facial expression. We have researched to evaluate the automotive frontal face by using the facial words and the perceived age. Then we verified experimentally how effectively the line drawing image could work and coche-PICASSO image could be used for the image stimulation. As a result of this paper, a part of the facial words could be strongly correlated to both the facial expressions and the perceived age in the line drawing image. Besides, it was also known that the perceived age in the coche-PICASSO image was always younger than those of the line drawing image.
