Japanese terrestrial digital broadcasting (ISDB-T) began in 2003. To spread its signals throughout the country, optical fibers will be used to complement radio-wave networks. This paper describes recent applications of optical transmission of ISDB-T. It also describes our research on re-transmission with 40-GHz Radio On Fiber technology.

A Novel Millimeter Wave Receiver Using Self-heterodyne Detection for a Digital Broadcasting ROF System

Radio on fiber is an effective method to provide multi-channel digital TV services to subscribers premises where it is difficult to install optical fibers or coaxial cables. In this paper, we propose a novel millimeter-wave receiver for subscribers that uses self-heterodyne detection. It can improve sensitivity by 10 dB compared with a conventional self-heterodyne receiver. A wireless transmission experiment proved the practicality of this receiver and ROF system

Phase-diversity demodulation of an optical DQPSK signal

The first phase-diversity coherent demodulation of a 2.97-Gbps optical differential quadriphase-phase-shift-keyed (DQPSK) signal has been demonstrated. An excellent bit error rate of 10/sup -11/ was achieved at -27 dBm of the the received signal power.
