Depolymerization reactions of hyaluronic acid in solution.

Samples of microbial sodium hyaluronate were degraded by heating, ultrasonication ultraviolet (UV) and gamma-ray irradiation and enzymatic treatment. The weight-average molecular weight, Mw, of hyaluronate in 0.15 M NaCl and 0.06 M Na2HPO4 was determined by gel filtration with UV detection. The Mw of the degraded samples varied from 8 x 10(4) to 1.38 x 10(6). Depolymerization processes can be described by linear relationship (1/Mw)2 = f(t) in the case of ultrasonic treatment and by non-linear relationships in the cases of heating and UV irradiation at 257 nm. Gamma-ray irradiation and enzymatic treatment caused chemical degradation and depolymerization to oligosaccharides, respectively.

Two kinds of layered atelocollagen materials cross-linked with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDIC), starch dialdehyde and glyoxal were enzymatically treated by bacterial collagenase. Evaluating collagenase digestion assay for these material showed progressive differences, particularly in the group of samples cross-linked with HMDIC. This should offer the possibility of programmed enzymatic degradation. These materials may be toxicologically acceptable as proven by the short-term test used for cytotoxicity evaluation.

Modification of layered atelocollagen by ultraviolet irradiation and chemical cross-linking: structure stability and mechanical properties

Katarína Vizárová; Dušan Bakoš; Milena Reháková; V. Macho

Physical and chemical modifications of atelocollagen materials have been carried out to improve their physical, chemical and biological properties. We have studied the influence of physical modification using ultraviolet irradiation and of chemical modification using hexamethylene diisocyanate on the physical properties of layered atelocollagen materials. The study evaluated the structural stability of cross-linked materials using swelling experiments. Influence on mechanical properties is also discussed.

AbstractA method has been developed for identification of corrosive iron–gall inks in historical drawings and documents. The method is based on target-factor analysis of visible–near infrared fibre optic reflection spectra (VIS–NIR FORS). A set of reference spectra was obtained from model samples of laboratory-prepared inks covering a wide range of mixing ratios of basic ink components deposited on substrates and artificially aged. As criteria for correspondence of a studied spectrum with a reference spectrum, the apparent error in target (AET) and the empirical function SPOIL according to Malinowski were used. The capability of the proposed tool to distinguish corrosive iron–gall inks from bistre and sepia inks was evaluated by use of a set of control samples of bistre, sepia, and iron–gall inks. Examples are presented of analysis of historical drawings from the 15th and 16th centuries and written documents from the 19th century. The results of analysis based on the tool were confirmed by XRF analysis and colorimetric spot analysis. Raman spectroscopy and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy were used to examine 14 blue inks obtained from commercially available stationery. Standard colouring agents in the inks: β-phase of phtalocyanine blue PB15 and some homologues of the methyl violet class, were identified. Surface enhanced Raman spectra were recorded on a firm heterostructure of silver/nanocrystalline diamond/silicon constituting an active substrate providing the possibility to write directly on the surface. Based on the differences in traditional and surface enhanced Raman spectra, two inks were identified unambiguously, the remaining inks were categorised into three groups exhibiting common spectral features. Despite their similarity, surface enhanced Raman spectra exhibited soft variations enabling discrimination of the inks, thus proving the usefulness of the method.

Role of thermoxidation and depolymerisation in the ageing of systems paper/gum arabic/historical ink

The aim of this study was to assess the role and proportional representation of depolymerisation and thermoxidation reaction paths in the systems paper/gum arabic (GA)/historical ink during various accelerated ageing methods. The historical inks under study are iron-gall, bistre, and sepia. The results indicate that thermoxidation represents only a minor reaction path in the ageing of paper/GA/ink systems except for the iron-gall ink and the light-thermal method of accelerated ageing. The iron-gall ink accelerates both reaction paths of ageing, i.e. thermoxidation and depolymerisation; in this case, thermoxidation might become the prevailing degradation reaction path. For the sepia ink, an anti-depolymerisation stabilising effect in thermal methods of ageing has been detected. Considering the thermoxidation reaction path, the results even suggest that a compound preventing thermoxidation is formed during the thermally accelerated ageing in air and in 100 mg L−1 of NO2. In the light-thermal ageing, the most stable sample is the Whatman paper (W)/GA/bistre ink.
