Gall-inducing insects of an Araucaria Forest in southern Brazil

Tiago Shizen Pacheco Toma; Milton de Souza Mendonca Junior

Gall-inducing insects of an Araucaria Forest in southern Brazil. Diversity of galling insects is reported for the first time in an Araucaria Forest site. We address gall characteristics, host plant identification and the inducer identification and provide additional information about sites of gall occurrence in a mosaic of continuous forest and natural forest patches. After 40h of sampling we found 57 species of five insect orders, the majority of them Diptera (Cecidomyiidae), galling 43 host plant species, which in turn belonged to 18 host plant families. Stem and buds together, compared to leaves, harbored more galls, which were mostly glabrous, isolated, fusiform and green. Myrtaceae, Asteraceae and Melastomataceae were the most representative host families. Similarities in gall characteristics to what has been reported in the literature probably result from spatial correlation in a larger scale driven by ecological and evolutionary processes.

To evaluate the effect of egg age of Spartocera dentiventris (Berg) on the parasitism by Gryon gallardoi (Brethes), groups of 12 eggs of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12 days old were exposed to one female of G. gallardoi on a test tube, with the wasp observed for 2h subsequently. Later, the eggs were individualised and incubated (25 +/- 1 degrees C; 12h photoperiod) until adult emergence. To identify the preferred age, groups of 12 eggs of 1, 3, 5, 7 and 12 days of age were simultaneously exposed to a parasitoid female on an arena for 2h. These groups were also individualised and incubated until parasitism was confirmed. On all ages tested parasitism was at about 88.5 +/- 2.64%, with a reduction in adult parasitoid emergence with age increasing (P < 0.01). The development time increased with increasing egg age (P < 0.01), with males developing faster. Parasitoid sex ratio for all ages tested was female-biased (0.49:1), with the proportion of males invariant with host age (P > 0.05). When the egg groups were exposed simultaneously, the female preferred eggs one and three days old. The results indicate a preference of G gallardoi for younger eggs of S. dentiventris, with host egg age exerting a negative effect on development time and offspring emergence of the parasitoid.

Diversity and population characteristics of terrestrial isopods (Crustacea, Oniscidea) across three forest environments in southern Brazil

Terrestrial isopods are important and dominant component of meso and macrodecomposer soil communities. The present study investigates the diversity and species composition of terrestrial isopods on three forests on the Serra Geral of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The area has two natural formations (Primary Woodland and Secondary Woodland) and one plantation of introduced Pinus. The pitfall traps operated from March 2001 to May 2002, with two summer periods and one winter. There were 14 sampling dates overall. Of the five species found: Alboscia silveirensis Araujo, 1999, Atlantoscia floridana (van Name, 1940), Benthana araucariana Araujo & Lopes, 2003 (Philoscidae), Balloniscus glaber Araujo & Zardo, 1995 (Balloniscidae) and Styloniscus otakensis (Chilton, 1901) (Styloniscidae); only A. floridana is abundant on all environments and B. glaber is nearly exclusive for the native forests. The obtained data made it possible to infer about population characteristics of this species. The Similarity Analysis showed a quantitative difference among the Secondary forest and Pinus plantation, but not a qualitative one. The operational sex ratio (OSR) analysis for A. floridana does not reveal significant differences in male and female proportions among environments. The reproductive period identified in the present study for A. floridana was from spring to autumn in the primary forest and Pinus plantation and during all year for the secondary forest. The OSR analysis for B. glaber reveals no significant differences in abundance between males and females for secondary forest, but the primary forest was a significant difference. The reproductive period for B. glaber extended from summer to autumn (for primary and secondary forest). This is the first record for Brazil of an established terrestrial isopod population in a Pinus sp. plantation area, evidenced by the presence of young, adults and ovigerous females, balanced sex ratio, expected fecundity and reproduction pattern, as compared to populations from native vegetation areas.

A new genus and species of Lasiopteridi (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) associated with Myrciaria delicatula (Myrtaceae) from Brazil, with identification keys of tribes and unplaced genera

Fernandesia meridionalis Rodrigues & Maia, a new genus and species of Cecidomyiidae associated with Myrciaria delicatula O. Berg (Myrtaceae) is described and illustrated (male, female, pupa, and larva) based on material from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new genus belongs to Lasiopteridi, but it cannot be placed to tribe. A key to the tribes of Lasiopteridi and one to the unplaced genera of Neotropical Lasiopteridi are given.
