The impressive results achieved by several companies through the Six Sigma technique have motivated other organisations to follow their footsteps in search for competitiveness. As noticed in the literature, most Six Sigma projects in manufacturing have aimed to obtain process enhancements, focusing mostly on optimising product cycle times with almost none taking into consideration environmental aspects as part of their developments. Furthermore, organisations have been worrying worldwide about environmental issues, seeking to foster their eco-efficiency. As a result, the main objective of this paper is to formally introduce the environmental considerations into the Six Sigma technique by proposing a procedure to incorporate environmental variables into the DMAIC process as a way to increase the eco-efficiency level of the firms. Based on the literature review, a conceptual procedure to incorporate environmental variables into the Six Sigma DMAIC technique is proposed. To verify its possible application to real-life situations an action research was developed and could verify that the traditional Six Sigma approach (dealing only with the manufacturing process variables) was capable of improving the eco-efficiency level of the process area under study by 11%. The consideration of the environmental variables as part of the DMAIC technique as per the proposed approach allowed an additional 20% gain, which demonstrates its adequacy to increase the eco-efficiency level of the manufacturing area under evaluation.

Grinding is one of the most widely used manufacturing processes and, in the last few decades, has developed considerably. An example of these developments is hardening by grinding, an operation that is being studied to provide an option to the conventional hardening processes. This study presents the use of a cylindrical grinding process to produce a martensitic structure on the surface of SAE 4340 steel workpieces, and aims at adjusting the parameters of this process. To do much, a set of experiments were carried out using three cycles of grinding: the first one just to obtain a workpiece with regular diameter; the second cycle is that which will provide heating and cooling of the ground workpiece; and the last cycle is to provide corrections to the dimensions and roughness. Results of the experiments showed that hardening by grinding is possible and that the workpiece achieved hardness levels compatible to those provided by the conventional hardening processes. The use of such a process for surface hardening purposes has been researched and developed with a view to increasing the productivity of the process, ensuring dimensional and surface quality, in addition to mechanical resistance.

The Brazilian textile industry has been facing fierce competition from low cost imports coming from China and other Far East countries. In order to keep their ability to compete in the local market, Brazilian companies have adopted a product differentiation strategy. This has been achieved by developing new products with better quality at lower costs, characteristics to be provided by new technology in manufacturing equipment. Usually, this new technology is transferred to Brazilian firms by international equipment manufacturers. Hence this paper aims at contributing to increase the competitiveness of Brazilian textile companies by supporting them with theoretical knowledge and practical guidance to allow them to improve the effectiveness of their technology transfer (TT) processes. To this end, we developed an exploratory evaluation of four fabric production companies where technology transfer projects have been implemented, using the Stage-gate model proposed by Jagoda, Maheshwari e Lonseth (2010) as a normative framework. As a result of such analysis, similarities and dissimilarities between the technology transfer practices employed by the four companies evaluated were identified. Also, it was possible to demonstrate that the utilization of a TT process based on a Stage-gate framework could be employed to implement significant improvement in the TT practices used by Brazilian textile companies, which could help them face the fierce competition imposed by the low cost imports from Far East countries.

Palabras clave: simulacion de Monte Carlo, linea de montaje, planta fabril, estudios de tiempos Monte Carlo Simulation as a Tool for Decision Making in an Assembly Line of a Manufacturing Company

The purpose of this paper is to propose a management tool to identify actions and plans to enhance the competitiveness of a company. It starts by proposing the concepts of competitive variables, competitive profile and competitive distance as a basis for developing a model to measure the competitiveness degree of enterprises within the same industrial sector. This conceptual model can be used by company management as a tool to identify opportunity areas and related actions required to enhance competitiveness. To do that, it is required to compare the company competitive profile against a competitive standard to be established. The competitive standard should be a company that, according to some objective criterion, is considered a paradigm of competitiveness in the industrial sector where operates the company for which the degree of competitiveness is to be measured. The paper also presents a practical example that shows how the proposed model could be applied to a real-world situation.

In the search for competitiveness machining companies are applying concepts of lean manufacturing, like the fast setup, for the elimination of losses in the process. However, most of the companies users of CNC machines still face a significant barrier in this field: the presetting of tools is usually performed manually, and requires high times for the preparation of the machines. In this paper the losses in production caused by the manual presetting operations are detached, showing the results in terms of delays generated in the setup operations of machines, and also the reductions in the utilization rates of CNC machines.
