Educational Virtual-Wear Trial: More Than a Virtual Try-On Experience

Ming-Liang Cao; Yi Li; Zhigeng Pan; Josephine Csete; Shu Sun; Jie Li; Yu Liu

Developments in computer capabilities, networks, mobile devices, and social media have enabled researchers and educators to increasingly employ blended strategies when developing new learning technologies. In addition, there is a growing need to develop discipline-specific learning technologies as result of expanding research in various domains. The study reported here was conducted in the context of a textile and clothing higher education course. The key aim was to develop a new learning technology for university students, specifically to help them learn about clothing thermal functional design (CTFD).

Customized Body Mapping to Facilitate the Ergonomic Design of Sportswear

Ming-Liang Cao; Yi Li; Yue-Ping Guo; Lei Yao; Zhigeng Pan

A successful high-performance sportswear design that considers human factors should result in a significant increase in thermal comfort and reduce energy loss. The authors describe a body-mapping approach that facilitates the effective ergonomic design of sportswear. Their general framework can be customized based on the functional requirements of various sports and sportswear, the desired combination and selection of mapping areas for the human body, and customized quantitative data distribution of target physiological indicators.

Usability Study of CAD for Clothing Thermal Computational Design Education

Ming-Liang Cao; Yi Li; Josephine Csete; Zhigeng Pan

This paper describes a usability study of CAD for teaching and learning clothing thermal computational design (CTCD) for university students of fashion and textiles. The CAD helps students to learn the clothing thermal computational design through computational design simulations (CD-Sims). The pedagogical strategies of employing CAD, and learning process and pedagogical implementation of CD-Sims are discussed. In addition, a user study employing the CD-Sims with CAD indicated that they enhanced students’ learning outcomes on pre-test and post-test clothing thermal computational design scores.

Application of Visualization in Clothing Thermal Computational Design

Ming-Liang Cao; Lu Jin; Yi Li; Zhigeng Pan

Computational design provides a scientific and quantitative way for designers to conduct clothing functional design. In this study, the authors describe the application of 2D/3D visualization in the clothing thermal computational design process. The computational 2D visualization is employed to compare the key parameters between target cases and select appreciate case design. The computational 3D visualization can provide more detail supplementary information to demonstrate the final effects of the selected case design.

CPI Learning in Clothing Thermal Computational Design

Ming-Liang Cao; Yi Li; Josephine Csete; Zhigeng Pan

This paper proposes a CPI (conceptual-procedural-integrative) learning method for textiles and clothing university students to learn the computational design for clothing thermal functions and performance on knowledge, skills and application levels. First, the CPI learning method is discussed. Second, three proposed learning approaches (virtual trial learning, 3M learning, F/P-oriented design learning) on knowledge, skills and application in clothing thermal computational design are described. Third, the paper describes a course design and user study of a one-semester university apparel functional design course. The data of a pre-post study were collected. The results showed that the students achieved significant improvement in theoretical academic content on knowledge, skills and application.
