PURPOSE: to investigate the life quality of subjects with mouth or oronasal breathing. METHOD: the sampling was composed of 49 volunteers distributed into 2 groups: mouth breathing subjects’ group with 24 subjects and oronasal breathing subjects’ group (mouth and nose) with 25 subjects, within the 18-38 age group, both genders. The WHOQOL-BREF (Portuguese version) protocol was used and the data analysis and recording were carried out using the Statistical Analysis System. RESULTS: the obtained results underwent Mantel-Haenszel chi-square test and variance analysis. Life quality in oronasal breathing subjects was demonstrated to be better in environmental, physical and psychological domain in relation to mouth breathing subjects. CONCLUSION: considering the obtained differences, the study draws attention to the need for better investigating the profile of oronasal breathing subjects and its relevance, so that the conducts, such as disregarding the group of oronasal breathing subjects or gathering them as mouth breathing subjects, are not improperly adopted.

PURPOSE: to compare Suprahyoid musculatures electric activity during swallowing in subjects with dissimilar morphological and dental patterns. METHODS: surface Electromyographys records were taken from 32 healthy volunteers who do not have Temporomandibular Dysfunction, subdivided into two groups, Angles 16 Class I subjects and 16 Class III subjects, males and females, aging from 18 to 25-year old. RESULTS: the values to Root Mens Square (p 0.05) Class I (47.6485) e Class III (47.9437). CONCLUSION: class I subjects showed a smaller average amplitude, with increase and decrease of synchronized and balanced electric activity. Class III subjects showed a larger average amplitude and a larger desynchronized and unbalanced period during deglutition.

Methods: a sample consisting of three distinct groups, equally subdivided into Nasal, Oral and Oronasal Respirators. The behavior of the orbicular muscle of the mouth (upper part) and mentual one was measured by surface electromyography at rest, swallowing and labial isometry. Results: in all situations investigated, the orbicular muscle of the mouth (upper part) and mental muscle showed no significant difference in relation to Root Means Square, that is, average electrical activity between Oral and Oronasal Respirators. The data showed a significant difference in In Nasal Respirators, as compared to the other groups. Conclusion: similarity was seen in the comparison of perioral muscles behavior between oral and oronasal respirators, however, a significant difference in relation to nasal respirators.

INTRODUCTION The interpretation of the speech results obtained with the buccinator myomucosal flap in the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency in patients with cleft palate has been limited by the restriction in the number of patients and the time of postoperative follow-up. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of the buccinator myomucosal flap on speech hypernasality in the treatment of patients with cleft palate and velopharyngeal insufficiency. METHODS Patients with repaired cleft palate (± lip) who were submitted to surgical correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency using the bilateral buccinator myomucosal flap were assessed. Hypernasality (scores 0 [absent], 1 [mild], 2 [moderate], or 3 [severe]) was analyzed by three evaluators by measuring the audiovisual records collected in early and late preoperative and postoperative periods (3 and 12 months, respectively). The values were considered significant for a 95% Confidence Interval (p<0.05). RESULTS Thirty-seven patients with cleft palate (± lip) showing moderate (16.2%) or severe (83.8%) hypernasality in the preoperative period were included. Analyses of the late postoperative period showed that hypernasality (0.5±0.7) was significantly (p<0.05) lower than the hypernasality of the preoperative and recent postoperative periods (2.8±0.4 and 1.7±0.9, respectively). CONCLUSION The buccinator myomucosal flap is effective in reducing/eliminating hypernasality in patients with cleft palate (± lip) and velopharyngeal insufficiency.
