Tourism and development 2017: Active & Sports Tourism: Feel the freedom of the water: Book of abstracts

Mitja Gorenak; Andreja Trdina

Under the title Tourism and Development 2017 – Active and Sports Tourism: Feel the Freedom of Water we have conducted the 4th annual scientific conference, organized by the three partner faculties, Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor, Faculty of Sports and Tourism, Educons University from Novi Sad and Libertas Business school from Zagreb. This book of extended abstracts presents a wide range of over 25 different views on three topics that were discussed at the conference. The introductory part presents short summaries of thoughts discussed by our invited keynote speakers. The first section presents extended abstracts from the field of active tourism, which address the diverse aspects of active vacationing as becoming increasingly important in tourism. The second thematic section includes extended abstracts on the topic of sports tourism, a specific category of tourism that has been developing rapidly with more and more visitors coming to major international sports events and also more and more visitors actively seeking sports related vacation. The last section presents extended abstracts on accessible tourism, nowadays increasingly important area arising from the principles of ensuring equal opportunities and promoting social inclusion in tourism. All the extended abstracts provide scientific views on selected topics, and, thus, bring additional knowledge into the particular field of tourism.

The learning process at the faculty requires not only attending lectures and active participation in the tutorials, but also intensive individual work of a student, which is often presented in the form of a seminar paper. However, the most important individual work of a student is definitely a final paper - a diploma or a masters thesis. In order to present and facilitate the preparation of written works for the students of the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor, we have prepared this handbook for writing and editing texts at the faculty. The professional monograph covers the chapters that lead the student through the whole process of research and writing their paper. From the initial search of the research idea and the basics of scientific writing and research in tourism, to the individual steps of the research process and research methods. The professional monograph also includes a chapter on personal relationships, which in particular addresses the relationship between a student and a mentor in the process of preparing the paper or thesis. The handbook also provides practical advice on language and text designing, as well as instructions for citing references. The professional monograph, thus, combines basic information that both students of tourism and their lecturers will use in their study and work processes, as they will follow the uniform guidelines for writing texts in tourism at the Faculty of Tourism.

The immersive power of Internet and the ability to conduct on-line business marks a line between failure and success. The objective of this paper is to determine whether there are any factors that can be related to the web presence of entities active in Slovenian tourism. Such factors would help to identify the key issues for improving the web presence of Slovenian tourism entities. A list of 2181 entities representing the population of active business units in the Slovenian tourism industry was obtained from Telecom Slovenia’s online service www.bizi.si. The units were considered to be active in the tourism sector if their primary code belonged to the following group: i 55.10, i 55.20, i 55.30, i 56.10, n 79.11, h 49.39, n 77.34, or r 93.292. Each entity’s presence on the Internet by means of a web page address was checked. Statistical analyses (associations, simple logistic regression, decision trees) were performed to verify associations or relations between web presence and other data on companies. Of the 2181 entities, only 655 are present on the Internet by means of a web page. As expected, companies with more employees are more web-present than those with fewer; with two or more employees, the web presence exceeds 60. Small firms, newly established ones, or those with few employees tend not to have web pages; the worrying fact is that there is a considerable number of companies still without a web page despite having an adequate annual income. The analysis has exposed the astonishing fact that many Slovenian companies in the tourism sector are not present on the Internet. Even some larger firms do not have a web page. This fact shows that Slovenian tourism entities are lagging behind global trends and that significant efforts need to be put into ict and the e-enabling of Slovenian tourism sector. Keywords: ict in tourism, web presence, tourism industry, technologies
