The Remote Didactic Laboratory Laboratorio Didattico Remoto - LA.DI.RE. ldquoG. Savastanordquo is the e-learning measurement laboratory supported by the Italian Ministry of Education and University. It involves about 20 Italian universities and provides students of electric and electronic measurement courses with access to remote measurement laboratories delivering different didactic activities related to measurement experiments. In order to demonstrate the versatility for didactic use, the overview of some experiments is given. The didactic experiments summarized in this paper concern measurement characterization of instruments and communication systems, measurement devices for remote laboratories, basic electrical measurements, magnetic measurements, electromagnetic-interference measurements, and signal processing for measurement applications.

The Remote Didactic Laboratory Laboratorio Didattico Remoto -LA.DI.RE. “G. Savastano” is an e-learning measurement laboratory supported by the Italian Ministry of Education and University. It provides the students of electric and electronic measurement courses with access to remote measurement laboratories, delivering different didactic activities related to measurement experiments. The core of the software architecture is the integration of the Learning Management System (LMS) with the remotely accessible measurement laboratories through web services and thin client paradigm, providing a new approach to remote experiments on measurement instrumentation. The overview of this paper is on the different solutions concerning the thin client technology, and the solution implemented is described. This solution takes into account the delivered services to students and teachers and permits optimization of the communication performances. The results of the comparison among the performances of different implementations of the thin client paradigm highlight the advantages of the adopted solution. As a consequence, the description of the thin client protocol implemented, together with the presentation of the LMS and delivered services given in a previous paper, makes an exhaustive analysis of the software architecture of the LA.DI.RE. “G. Savastano.”

A Novel Approach to Remote Teaching: Multilanguage Magnetic Measurement Experiment

Drago Cmuk; Mladen Boršić; Tarik Mutapcic; Sergio Rapuano

A novel approach to electric and electronic measurement teaching has been developed, allowing students from different countries to gain access to measurement on real instrumentation, with no need for expensive laboratory instrumentation and personnel. It is shown using an adaptive magnetic measurement experiment on a multilingual base. Following current European Union (EU) efforts to expand the newest educational principles to partner and neighboring countries, this approach can be used to spread the thriving knowledge economy and lifelong learning idea among them, thus creating a realizable European education and research area. Developed in the framework of a remotely accessible laboratory that is realized at the University of Sannio, Benevento, Italy, the experiment allows students to analyze the characteristics of different magnetic materials and the influence of hysteresis phenomena on magnetic and electrical circuits. The experiment includes the interactive verification of the knowledge acquired by the students and can be executed in the following four languages: 1) English; 2) Italian; 3) Croatian; and 4) Romanian.

Internet-Enabled Calibration Services: Design of a Secure Calibration System

Marko Jurčević; Mladen Boršić; Roman Malarić; Hrvoje Hegeduš

A growing number of measurements in the commercial and industrial sectors need to refer to traceability to national and international standards. Instrument and reference standard calibration is resource and time consuming. Since many available digital instruments are provided with some communication interfaces and Internet-enabled metrology has rapidly been developing in recent years, it is possible to create an actual remote calibration system with remote control capabilities. This approach addresses a wide range of possible applications that can drive many kinds of different devices and can be easily upgraded. This paper focuses on some of the security problems regarding remotely executed Internet-enabled calibration processes.

Internet-enabled calibration services: aspects of laboratory information system security

Marko Jurčević; Roman Malarić; Mladen Boršić

A growing number of measurements in commercial and industrial sector needs to refer to the traceability to the national (and also international) standards. Since the Internet-enabled metrology is rapidly developing in the recent years, it offers new possibilities for calibration services. In the same time these services must provide the overall security of the calibration data from the point of acquisition to the storage and analysis process. Information security has become a critical part of information and communication systems that are used in ordinary metrology laboratories, especially in those who also perform remote (Internet-enabled) calibrations. This paper identifies and explores the different security issues of the Internet-enabled metrology and requests for public key infrastructure implementation in a laboratory information system

Ring-core flux-gate magnetometer with microprocessor

Tomislav Kilić; Mladen Boršić; Stanko Milun

Abstract In this paper the realisation of a flux-gate magnetometer based on a microprocessor is presented. This magnetometer operates as a closed-loop feedback system which is controlled by the microprocessor. The main part of the magnetometer is a sensor consisting of ferromagnetic core, drive coil and sense coil. Because of many advantages, the ring-core sensor, instead of an open core, is used. The external magnetic field is measured by means of filtering the second harmonic amplitude of the sense coil induced voltage. The amplitude of the second harmonic is filtered by the band-pass so that the analog output signal is accessible. After the A/D conversion of this signal, additional digital filtering using Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is applied and an output signal in digital form is obtained.
