Abstract1,3-Thiazol derivatives have been synthesized via reaction of 1-(1-(5,6-dimethoxy-2-oxobenzo[d]thiazol-3(2H)-yl)propan-2-ylidene)-4-substituted thiosemicarbazide with different halides, namely, ethyl bromoacetate, ethyl-2-bromopropionate, phenacyl bromide, p-bromophenacyl bromide and/or substituted hydrazonoyl halides. The new compounds were evaluated as antimicrobial agents.

Hydrazine derivatives and o-benzoylbenzoic acid as a source of phthalazines with their antimicrobial activities

Magdy M. Hemdan; Sherif M. Taha; Adel M. Gabr; Mohamed Y. Elkady

Starting from 2-benzoylbenzoic acid (1) and prototype hydrazine itself or some of its simple congeners produce phthalazin-1(2H)-one derivatives 2a–d. Reactions of 2 with P2S5 or POCl3 gave their thione derivatives 3a–c or the chloro derivative 4 respectively. Further reactions of phthalazines 3 and 4 with hydrazine derivatives afforded their hydrazinyl derivatives 5a–d. Compounds 5a and 5d were used as a precursor to triazolo 6 and pyrazolyl phthalazines 7. The antimicrobial activities of some of the prepared phthalazines were tested.

Pentane-2,4-dione and 3-ethoxycarbonylcoumarin react in the presence of sodium ethoxide to form 10-acetyl-7,9-dihydroxy-6H-benzo[c]chromen-6-one (2). Compound 2 reacted with aromatic aldehydes and ethyl cyanoacetate to give the chromeno-chromenediones 3 and 4 respectively, with hydrazine hydrate to form the azine 5, with phenyl hydrazine giving the chromeno-indazole 6, with primary amines to form the imines 7a–f, and with thiourea to give the chromeno-quinazoline 8. Methyl 2-amino-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-pyrano[3,2-c]chromene-3-carboxylate (9a) and the corresponding 3-carbonitrile 9b were prepared, and the reactions of the ester 9a with phenacyl chloride, furoyl chloride, and hydrazine hydrate were investigated.

Synthesis of some new phthalazines and their evaluation as corrosion inhibitors of steel

Magdy M. Hemdan; Sherif M. Taha; Adel M. Gabr; Mohamed Y. Elkady

A convenient synthesis has been achieved of 11 substituted phthalazines starting from the condensation of 2-(p-toluoyl)benzoic acid with hydrazine and some of its simple congeners, H2NNHR. Four of the phthalazines showed activity as inhibitors of the corrosion of steel immersed in 5 M HCl solutions.

OBJECTIVE Sacrospinous colpopexy (SSC) is a well-known surgical technique to correct apical support defect, however its approach is still challenging. The current study describes an alternative and economic approach for suture placement in the sacrospinous ligament during SSC using Masson luethy needle holder. STUDY DESIGN A prospective study was conducted in a tertiary care center. The study recruited women with uterovaginal prolapse or post hysterectomy vaginal vault prolapse scheduled for SSC as a constructive surgery for vaginal superior segment defect. Eligible women were assigned to have SSC using Masson luethy needle holder (Group I) for suture placement in the sacrospinous ligament. The control group (Group II) consisted of a group of patients who had SSC using Deschamps ligature carrier. RESULTS By the end of the study, 104 women underwent SSC. (Group I) included 55 women while (Group II) included 49 women. The mean SSC operative time was significantly shorter in (Group I) [109±33min versus 206±67min in (Group II), p<0001], with a mean difference of 10.5min [95% CI, 74-136]. This difference in SSC operative time was due to faster suture placement in (Group I) [47±14min versus 153±46min in (Group II), p<0001]. The mean SSC related operative blood loss was significantly less in (Group I) [582±349ml versus 985±463ml in (Group II), p<0001]. The perioperative complications, recurrence and cure rates were similar in both groups. CONCLUSION Using Masson luethy needle holder reduced the difficulty associated with suture placement during SSC and allowed the completion of the procedure within a significantly shorter time.
