Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify and validate the competencies perceived to be essential for library and information science (LIS) professionals keeping in view the needs of knowledge management (KM) applications in Indian academic libraries.Design/methodology/approach – After reviewing relevant literature on the topic, a list of 25 competencies was prepared and organized in five categories. A link for attending the survey (list of KM competency statements) for the validation of competencies was sent via electronic mail to the teachers (95 in numbers) of 65 LIS schools where post‐graduate courses in LIS were offered. Respondents were asked to nominate the level of importance for validation of each proposed KM competency.Findings – Findings of the study show a minor difference in the mean scores of five categories of competencies, but all the competencies were validated as needed. However, respondents were of the opinion that development of competencies in the field of management by LIS p...

Purpose – This paper aims to present an exploration of the potential utilisation of different information and communication technologies (ICT) in Indian academic libraries. Design/methodology/approach – A survey method was used for the collection of data. A structured questionnaire, containing close-ended questions, was sent by postal mail to 30 librarians of the Central University Libraries in India, of which 15 questionnaires were returned. Findings – Academic libraries in India have mostly been involved in applying traditional ICT-based solutions for the management of various library functions and services, particularly for organising and retrieving information. Use of modern ICT-based tools of knowledge creation and sharing such as web discovery tools, blogs, wikis, Real Simple Syndication feeds, social networking and social bookmarking seems uncommon in academic libraries. Lack of trained staff in ICT, low level of ICT skills among library users, unawareness of potential benefits of ICT and inadequat...

ABSTRACT This study analyzes the current state of gold Open Access (OA) in India based on papers published in the Web of Science indexed journals. It specifically focuses on research output published in OA journals and examines the difference between gold OA and general research output for papers authored by Indian researchers. In order to analyze the Indian contribution of gold OA literature and compares with other countries, Web of Science™-Core Collection was used. There is an increasing trend of contributing research papers in OA journals by Indian researchers. Among the top 20 publishing countries India ranks 10th place in terms of the general research output, but secures 8th place in terms of gold OA papers. However, Indias position in terms of share of gold OA publications is relatively higher than other leading countries of the world. Researchers in India mostly prefer to contribute their gold OA papers in Indian journals rather foreign journals and the proportion of gold OA research output in Clinical, Preclinical, Health, Life Sciences and Physicals Sciences is much higher than other disciplines such as Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences. Since most of the research output in India is published in local journals, the study suggests further analyses of publications which are not published in Web of Science indexed journals.

This chapter provides an overview of knowledge management (KM). The concept of KM is described along with the concept of knowledge. The concept of two major categories of knowledge, tacit and explicit, is briefly explained. The chapter explains different objectives of KM and also provides a brief overview of knowledge creation and the process of knowledge conversion from tacit to explicit and vice versa. The importance of KM for academia and for libraries is described, together with the emerging roles and responsibilities of KM needed to ensure successful KM implementation in libraries.

This chapter provides an overview of knowledge management (KM) tools. Different types of KM tools were identified from the KM literature. KM tools are mostly categorized on the basis of different KM processes. However, we have classified KM tools into two broad categories: (i) Information technology or IT-based KM tools and (ii) conventional or non-IT-based KM tools. KM tools that match the requirement of libraries are discussed along with their implications for libraries.

This chapter describes the history of knowledge management (KM) and discusses the evolution of different knowledge management systems. The history of KM is traced back to early civilization, where great efforts were made to preserve knowledge gained through experience and reflection over long periods of time. A brief description of different systems of management of knowledge is provided to give the reader an indication of how the practice of knowledge management developed.
