This paper analyses the information science research field of informetrics to identify publication strategies that have been important for its successful researchers. The study uses a micro-analysis of informetrics researchers from 5,417 informetrics papers published in 7 core informetrics journals during 1948–2012. The most productive informetrics researchers were analysed in terms of productivity, citation impact, and co-authorship. The 30 most productive informetrics researchers of all time span several generations and seem to be usually the primary authors of their research, highly collaborative, affiliated with one institution at a time, and often affiliated with a few core European centres. Their research usually has a high total citation impact but not the highest citation impact per paper. Perhaps surprisingly, the US does not seem to be good at producing highly productive researchers but is successful at producing high impact researchers. Although there are exceptions to all of the patterns found, researchers wishing to have the best chance of being part of the next generation of highly productive informetricians may wish to emulate some of these characteristics.

Visibility and impact of Iranian research institutions on the web

Mohammadamin Erfanmanesh; Fereshteh Didegah

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the web site performances of 18 Iranian Research Institutions based on the following factors: web impact factor (WIF), connectivity, visibility and traffic rank.Design/methodology/approach – In this research, AltaVista search engine was used to calculate the number of total links and WIF; and data for traffic rank, number of pages viewed and percentage of foreign and Iranian visitors were extracted from the Alexa data bank. Also correspondence analysis is employed to analyze the data using Johns Macintosh Project software.Findings – The results revealed that SANJESH Organization and Iranian Scientific Information and Documentation Center web sites have performed fairly well in most factors. These two web sites have the best ranking in traffic and attracted a large number of total links compared with the other web sites. The results of the correspondence analysis of these 18 web sites can be divided into three groups consisting of one, five and 12 web ...

The current research aims to investigate scientific productivity and collaboration of the top 10 productive Asian countries in Scopus database from 1996 to 2010 via scientometric approach. Those documents specified one of the 10 Asian counties (China, Japan, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Iran, Thailand and Malaysia) as their affiliated country, published during 1996-2010 and indexed in Scopus database, were selected as the sample of the study. The results of the study revealed that China has the highest number of publications among 10 top Asian countries. Over the period under consideration, 1124627 publications of Chinese researchers were indexed in Scopus. After China, Japan has the 2nd rank in scientific productivity among Asian countries which placed this country as the 4th rank worldwide in Scopus after USA, England, and China. Reults showed that Hong Kong clearly has the highest rate of cited publications, followed by Japan and singapore. Additionally, the most central and prolific countries in the collaboration network of the top Asian countries in terms of degree centrality are China, Japan and Hong Kong.

Mohammadamin Erfanmanesh; Zohreh Gholamhosseinzadeh; Reza Basirian Jahromi

The present study aims to investigate the scientific productivity, impact and collaborations of Iranian psychology and psychiatry researchers in Web of Science using a scientometric approach. A total of 1702 documents in the area of Psychology and Psychiatry which specified Iran as their affiliated country and indexed by Thomson Reuters, were selected as the population of the study. The results of the study revealed that the number of Iranian publications is increasing over the examined years. The results of the exponential regression test reported a 10.04 percent growth rate for Iranian publications in psychology and psychiatry. The most number of papers (547) has been published in 2008. Additionally, Iranian psychology and psychiatry publications in the Web of Science have received 2.81 citations per document. Moreover, Iranian psychology and psychiatry publications have received 4802 citations from 4712 documents and 21010 researchers from Iran other countries. American researchers have most cited Iranian publications among researchers from other countries. Additionally among foreign universities which cited Iranian publications, the most number of citations was received from Harvard University. The results of the study showed that more than 20% of all publications and 30% of all citations were made by Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Moreover, the analysis of the social network of co-authorship between universities using the UCINet software revealed that the Tehran University of Medical Sciences as well as the Islamic Azad University had the highest centrality degree with a value of 56 and 55, respectively. Finally, the Iranian researchers of psychology and psychiatry had collaborated with researchers from 77 countries all over the world. Among them, USA, UK and Australia were the most important collaborating partners of Iranian researchers.
