Hybrid DFP-CG method for solving unconstrained optimization problems

Wan Farah Hanan Wan Osman; Mohd Asrul Hery Ibrahim; Mustafa Mamat

The conjugate gradient (CG) method and quasi-Newton method are both well known method for solving unconstrained optimization method. In this paper, we proposed a new method by combining the search direction between conjugate gradient method and quasi-Newton method based on BFGS-CG method developed by Ibrahim et al. The Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP) update formula is used as an approximation of Hessian for this new hybrid algorithm. Numerical result showed that the new algorithm perform well than the ordinary DFP method and proven to posses both sufficient descent and global convergence properties.

Digital Social Media as a part of the eco-system in today’s global cyberspace business environment. It provides an excellent communication and marketing channel for knowledge societies in the world. The popularity of Digital Social Media has also influenced the personal lifestyle and encouraged the digital culture development among cyber community around the globe. Unfortunately, sharing their ideas, activities, statuses, and real-time location could cause them to several critical cybersecurity risks. These categories of risk caused severe impacts to the entire cyber community eco-system associated in digital social media that need to be managed and mitigated seriously. Recent empirical findings underlined the core information security requirement (confidentiality, integrity, and availability) contributes to the severity level of cybersecurity risks in digital social media. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the relationship between cybersecurity risks confidentiality, integrity, and availability in Digital Social Media. Questionnaires were distributed to the various active cyber communities and knowledge societies. The results of the mean score indicate that, more cybersecurity awareness program should be implemented in digital knowledge societies. Furthermore, the results of the correlation coefficient (r) values between >0.4 and <0.7 verifies that a moderate positive relationship exists between cybersecurity risks, confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information in Digital Social Media. Findings reveal that the highest moderate cybersecurity risk relationship between integrity and availability. This empirical evidence indicates how the core information security requirement influences each other’s on the cybersecurity risk severity. Through the findings, cyber communities and knowledge societies would be able to determine the direction and strength of the relationship among information security requirement and plan the appropriate cybersecurity awareness program to Digital Social Media users as a preventive approach to mitigate critical cybersecurity risks.

A New Search Direction for Broyden’s Family Method in Solving Unconstrained Optimization Problems

Mohd Asrul Hery Ibrahim; Zailani Abdullah; Mohd Ashlyzan Razik; Tutut Herawan

The conjugate gradient method plays an important role in solving large scale problems and the quasi-Newton method is known as the most efficient method in solving unconstrained optimization problems. Hence, in this paper, we proposed a new hybrid method between conjugate gradient method and quasi-Newton method known as the CG-Broyden method. Then, the new hybrid method is compared with the quasi-Newton methods in terms of the number of iterations and CPU-time using Matlabin Windows 10 which has 4 GB RAM and running using an Intel ® Core ™ i5. Furthermore, the performance profile graphic is used to show the effectiveness of the new hybrid method.. Our numerical analysis provides strong evidence that our CG-Broyden method is more efficient than the ordinary Broyden method Besides, we also prove that the new algorithm is globally convergent.

The Relationship among Student's Domain of Learning Development Implementing Virtual Learning in Higher Learning Institutions

Nik Zulkarnaen Khidzir; Khairul Azhar Mat Daud; Mohd Asrul Hery Ibrahim

Virtual learning environments (VLEs) are the basic components of contemporary distance learning, but can also be integrated with a physical learning environment which may be referred to as blended learning. The success of a VLEs implementation depends to a considerable extent on student acceptance and use of such an e-learning system. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the relationship among domains of learning (cognitive, psychomotor and affective) of the students in the implementation of VLEs in Higher Learning institutions. Through the purposive sampling techniques, questionnaires were distributed to 113 academic scholars in higher learning institutions (HLI) from various academic qualification, expertise and experiences. All hypothesis tested were significant. However, results of the correlation coefficient (r) values < 0.4 verifies that a weak positive relationship exists among all the domains of learning. Findings reveal that all the cognitive, psychomotor and affective skill influence each other. Through the findings, HLI practitioners and technologist could consider the ease use for VLEs in order to encourage the cognitive, psychomotor and affective skill development. discover how these variables influence each others. The finding could be significant to the improvement of the teaching and learning approach towards the development of students cognitive ability, psychomotor and affective skill. This paper explores mean score of each domain of learning variables (cognitive, psychomotor and affective). Appropriate quantitative analysis also conducted to test several hypotheses to determine the level of relationship among them. Related concept and previous literature also being reviewed to establish the scope of the study.
