A classification for content adaptation system

Mohd Farhan Md Fudzee; Jemal H. Abawajy

Content adaptation is an attractive solution for the ever growing desktop based Web content delivered to the user via heterogeneous devices, in order to provide acceptable experience while surfing the Web. Bridging the mismatch between the rich content and the user devices resources (display, processing, navigation, network bandwidth, media support) without user intervention requires a proactive behavior. While content adaptation poses multitude of benefits, without proper strategies, adaptation will not be truly optimized. There have been many projects focused on content adaptation that have been designed with different goals and approaches. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive classification for content adaptation system. The classification is used to group the approaches applied in the implementation of existing content adaptation system. Survey on some content adaptation systems also been provided. We also present the research spectrum in content adaptation and discuss the challenges.

Multi-criteria Content Adaptation Service Selection Broker

Mohd Farhan Md Fudzee; Jemal H. Abawajy; Mustafa Mat Deris

In this paper, we propose a service-oriented content adaptation framework and an approach to the Content Adaptation Service Selection (CASS) problem. In particular, the problem is how to assign adaptation tasks (e.g., transcoding, video summarization, etc) together with respective content segments to appropriate adaptation services. Current systems tend to be mostly centralized suffering from single point failures. The proposed algorithm consists of a greedy and single objective assignment function that is constructed on top of an adaptation path tree. The performance of the proposed service selection framework is studied in terms of efficiency of service selection execution under various conditions. The results indicate that the proposed policy performs substantially better than the baseline approach.

A protocol for discovering content adaptation services

Mohd Farhan Md Fudzee; Jemal H. Abawajy

Service-oriented content adaptation scheme has emerged to address content adaptation problem. In this scheme, content adaptation functions are provided as services by multiple providers, located across wide area network. To benefit from these services, clients must be able to locate them in the network. This makes service discovery as an important component. In this paper, we propose a service discovery protocol that takes into account searching space, searching time, QoS and physical location of the potential providers. The performance of the proposed protocol is studied in term of discoverability under various conditions and shown to be substantially better than the keyword-based and QoS-based approaches.

This paper introduced an indoor navigation application that helps junior students in Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FSKTM) to find their classroom location. This project implements the A* (pronounced A Star) path finding algorithm to calculate the shortest path for users. Users can choose to view the floor plan of the building or start navigation. Users can choose their starting point from the list and set their destination to start navigation. The application is then calculate the shortest path for users by implement the A* algorithm. The route path will show on the floor plan after calculation done. Thus, users will find this project is easy to use and time saving.

Nowadays, many areas in computer sciences use ontology such as knowledge engineering, software reuse, digital libraries, web on the heterogeneous information processing, semantic web, and information retrieval. The area of halal industry is the fastest growing global business across the world. The halal food industry is thus crucial for Muslims all over the world as it serves to ensure them that the food items they consume daily are syariah compliant. However, ontology has still not been used widely in the halal industry. Today, Muslim community still have problem to verify halal status for halal products in the market especially in foods consisting of E number. In this paper, ontology will apply at E numbers as a method to solve problems of various halal sources. There are various chemical ontology and databases found to help this ontology construction. The E numbers in this chemical ontology are codes for chemicals that can be used as food additives. With this E numbers ontology, Muslim community could identify and verify the halal status effectively for halal products in the market.

Service level agreement management framework for utility-oriented computing platforms

Jemal H. Abawajy; Mohd Farhan Md Fudzee; Mohammad Mehedi Hassan; Majed A. AlRubaian

With the increasing popularity of utility-oriented computing where the resources are traded as services, efficient management of quality of service (QoS) has become increasingly significant to both service consumers and service providers. In the context of distributed multimedia content adaptation deployment on service-oriented computing, how to ensure the stringent QoS requirements of the content adaptation is a significant and immediate challenge. However, QoS guarantees in the distributed multimedia content adaptation deployment on service-oriented platform context have not been accorded the attention it deserves. In this paper, we address this problem. We formulate the SLA management for distributed multimedia content adaptation deployment on service-oriented computing as an integer programming problem. We propose an SLA management framework that enables the service provider to determine deliverable QoS before settling SLA with potential service consumers to optimize QoS guarantees. We analyzed the performance of the proposed strategy under various conditions in terms of the SLA success rate, rejection rate and impact of the resource data errors on potential violation of the agreed upon SLA. We also compared the proposed SLA management framework with a baseline approach in which the distributed multimedia content adaptation is deployed on a service-oriented platform without SLA consideration. The results of the experiments show that the proposed SLA management framework substantially outperforms the baseline approach confirming that SLA management is a core requirement for the deployment of distributed multimedia content adaptation on service-oriented systems.

Hairulnizam Mahdin; Abdul Halim Omar; Siti Salwani Yaacob; Shahreen Kasim; Mohd Farhan Md Fudzee

The number of children dying because of heatstroke after being left in the car is worrying. From 1998, there are about 618 children have died in the United State of America (USA) because of heatstroke. It was the leading cause of fatalities in non-crash incident in USA. The same situation also arises in other countries. Life stress is being identified as among the factor that lead to this incident. In this paper, we proposed the used of Android Apps with an Estimote Beacon, a bluetooth device, to warn parents or guardians about their children being left in the car. An alarm will be raised after the parent leaves their children at prespecified range to avoid any risk of heatstroke from occurring.

A Survey on Energy-Aware Profiler for Mobile Devices

Muhammad Hanif Jofri; Mohd Farhan Md Fudzee; Mohd Norasri Ismail

Contemporary designs for mobile devices sometimes lack of energy-aware profiler thus require an optimized use of system power. Energy-aware profiler is one of the major parts in the energy management that plays an important role to minimize energy consumption in mobile devices. Many different methods and research efforts on energy-aware profiler have been discussed and proposed during the past few years. However, there is a little effort on summarizing and providing the generic requirement for energy-aware profilers in relation to mobile devices. In this paper we review several areas of classification in energy-aware profilers that have been recommended over the recent years. Moreover, we also discuss briefly on the categories, approaches and open challenges that related to energy profiler.
