Application of value stream mapping using simulation to decrease production lead time: a Malaysian manufacturing case

Alireza Esfandyari; Mohd Rasid Osman; Napsiah Ismail; Farzad Tahriri

Lean concept has been applied across many companies which offer value and eliminate wastes. Value stream map (VSM) as one of the fundamental tools in lean concept outlines the material and information flows for a product family to reduce wastes at discrete event production routine. In this paper, the improvement of the production lead time using VSM as a technique in a Malaysian supplier, with a job shop production system, is investigated. The main contribution of this paper is reducing production lead time when the Takt Time is much higher than the highest stations cycle time, and reducing unplanned released orders. This paper evaluates the present routing events using current state map and the future state is created answering the eight standard questions. Then, a detailed simulation model was developed to verify the result from future state map and answering the questions that are unable to be addressed by VSM.

A consensus on critical success factors for enterprise resource planning systems implementation: the experience of Malaysian firms

S.M. Jafari; Mohd Rasid Osman; M.Y. Rosnah; Sai Hong Tang

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems can be considered as the most important development in the corporate use of information technology (IT) and are beginning to be the backbone of organisations. The difficulties and high failure rate in implementing ERP systems have been widely cited in the literature. Factors affecting ERP implementation are complex and abundant and numerous authors have identified a variety of factors that can be considered to be critical to the success of an ERP implementation. This paper is an attempt to build a consensus agreement from previous researches about ERP Critical Success Factors (CSFs). Through a comprehensive review of the literature, 10 factors were found to be critical to ERP implementation success. The importance of these factors was investigated within Malaysian companies using questionnaire survey method. The survey results showed a high agreement on the identified CSFs and supported this studys literature findings.

Simulation of metal filling progress during the casting process

Shamsuddin Sulaiman; A.M.S. Hamouda; S. Abedin; Mohd Rasid Osman

Abstract Metal filling in pressure die-casting is a complex process where performance is governed by a number of design variables. The filling analysis of non-Newtonian fluid is based on the Navier–Stokes equations. In this paper a complete analysis is accomplished by combining the network element method and fluid flow analysis to describe an incremental flow front movement. It has been demonstrated that the developed two-dimensional numerical scheme for simulating mould filling behaviour can provide reliable results; such as pressure, velocity and temperature variation within the cavity. The temperature and pressure are important to the finished product quality and may be used to optimise the moulding process. The effect of draft angle over metal filling process is also investigated. The results obtained from the analysis have been verified against analytical results and published data.

Strategies for Integrating Quality, Environmental, Safety and Health Management Systems

Musli Mohammad; Mohd Rasid Osman; Rosnah Mohd Yusuff; Ibrahim Masood; Mohd Shahir Yahya; Jalil Azlis-Sani

This paper discusses the strategies for integrating Quality, Environmental, Safety and Health Management Systems based on survey and case studies results. Questionnaires were distributed to 87 companies that certified with both ISO9001 and ISO14001. Meanwhile, three case studies were conducted at the manufacturing companies that have integrated several management systems. There are two ways of integrating the management systems which are: (1) consecutive implementation of management systems followed by integration or (2) integrate the management systems simultaneously from the beginning. Based on survey and case studies, it was found that many organisations started with implementing individual management system first, and then followed by integrating the management systems. Almost all the survey respondents agreed that the sequence should start with establishing Quality Management System first, and then integrate with Environmental Management System and followed by Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

Rule-based feature extraction and recognition from STEP file

Napsiah Ismail; C.F. Tan; S.V. Wong; Mohd Rasid Osman; Shamsuddin Sulaiman

Data exchange and system integration have become important considerations in computer-aided systems in order to improve productivity. This has led to the development of a neutral format that is used to facilitate product data exchange between manufacturing components. This paper describes a methodology to extract feature information from a STEP file and recognize features using a rule-based technique.
