A process for the preparation of R alpha -cyclopentenoids and then R alpha , R omega -cyclopentanoids is described. The process involves the reaction of a compound of the formula where X is halo, particularly Br or I and P is a protecting group with an alkylborane to produce the R alpha -cyclopentenone. The R alpha -cyclopentenone is reacted with a R omega cuprate to produce the R alpha , R omega -cyclopentenoid. The process is used for the preparation of prostaglandins which are known pharmaceutically active compounds.

Patient Outcomes Research Teams: Managing Conflict of Interest

The new Agency for Health Care Policy and Research in the U.S. Public Health Service is funding a set of multidisciplinary groups called Patient Outcomes Research Teams (PORTs). Their purpose is to assess alternative treatments for medical conditions using a variety of outcome measures. In guiding insurance coverage, these PORTs are expected to wield considerable influence on medical practice and health policy. This book addresses possible threats to their credibility that might be based on real or apparent conflicts of interest, including both financial and other conflicts. It raises points to consider for the new agency, for PORTs and their institutions, for industry, for the health services research community, and for the U.S. Congress in avoiding and managing conflicts of interest.

Gearing Up for Health Data in the Information Age

This workshop summary focuses on public disclosure--the publication of provider-specific (but non-person-identified) information to improve health care and the delivery of health services. It also summarizes participant discussions about quality-of-care research in health database organizations, as well as issues related more broadly to the creation of a health data infrastructure.
