Ecological information system-data exchange system between manufacturers and recyclers

In order to realize a sustainable society, economically feasible recycling is essential. Such a system requires effective utilization of product and recycling process information for environmentally conscious product design and efficient, high quality recycling. A prototype of an ecological information system that enables information exchange between manufacturers and recyclers has been developed. Basic functions have been examined and future objectives for practical installation are being discussed.

Tracking Method for Digital Optical-Disk Systems.

Servo technologies making it possible to construct a tracking subsystem suitable for an optical disk system that stores coded data are reported in this paper as follows. (a) two-stage actuator tracking servo (b) tracking signal compensation (c) track-off detection and data recovery. The basic construction of a tracking servo system for an optical disk system using write-once media is described, but the concepts and techniques in this paper are applicable to other types of media.

Recycling technologies in Hitachi

Hitachi has developed a disassembleability evaluation method (DEM). DEM is a method of analyzing the disassembleability and recycling of products and helps to ease the recycling process. Since most of the energy consumed during the life cycle of a product is during its operation, energy-reducing features need to be incorporated at the design stage. Hitachi is promoting this, and is also making its products lighter. This is the key to producing environmentally conscious products (ECP).
