The Use and Abuse of Wine in Ancient China

This study traces the use of wine in ancient China. Employing archaeological and literary sources, the author discusses the manufacturing of wine, the use of wine in rituals and festivities, the attitudes toward wine-drinking, and the government control of the production and consumption of wine. Wine was a prestigious drink in both religious ceremonies and secular gatherings, yet it was also a symbol of wanton behaviour when used excessively.
