Graphene oxide has many applications such as in electronic devices, as storage energy device, biosensor, biomedical application, water purification, coating technology, as a composite and paper like materials. Hummer’s method is one of the most common methods used in synthesizing graphene oxide. Graphene is different in size and structure because of oxidized layered of graphene oxide hence, the expanded interlayer structure of graphene oxide can be easily exfoliated by ultrasonication. We report on the preparation of exfoliated graphene oxide by using sonication method. Ultraviolet-visible spectrometer (UV-Vis) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectra Analyzer (FTIR) were used to characterize the exfoliated graphite oxide. Exfoliation of graphite oxide is conducted using water bath sonication. In order to confirm the chemical conformation and structure of the produced graphene oxide, FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy were utilized. Both peak of C=O and C-C bond are detected using UV-Vis and the results were conf...

Obligation of occupational safety and health (OSH) legislation by designers and manufacturers: Perception of enforcement officers

Rabaayah Daud; Faizal Mohamed; Amran Ab. Majid; Muhammad Samudi Yasir

Designers and manufacturers of plants are responsible to design or redesign the process, product and workplace with consideration of eliminating hazards or controlling risks as early as possible at design stage. The purpose of this paper is to determine the perception of enforcement officers towards compliance and implementation of OSH legislation by the designers and manufacturers of plant. The research partners was a goverment department that enforce the related OSH laws to designers and manufacturers of the plant. A total of 59 technical staffs were surveyed together with examination of the sekunder data from the department to evaluate overall OSH legal obligation by the industries. This study demonstrate how OSH regulators play the roles to influence the industries to perform better in OSH.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia offered an undergraduate degree program in Nuclear Science since 1980 and the programme has undergone several modifications due to changes in national policy and priority. The programme covers nuclear sub-disciplines such as nuclear physic, radiobiology, radiochemistry, radiation chemistry and radiation safety. The radiochemistry component consists of radiochemistry, chemistry in nuclear industry, radiochemical analysis laboratory, radiopharmaceutical chemistry subjects and mini research project in radiochemistry.

Radiological risk of building materials using homemade airtight radon chamber

Norafatin Khalid; Amran Ab. Majid; Redzuwan Yahaya; Muhammad Samudi Yasir

Soil based building materials known to contain various amounts of natural radionuclide mainly 238U and 232Th series and 40K. In general most individuals spend 80% of their time indoors and the natural radioactivity in building materials is a main source of indoor radiation exposure. The internal exposure due to building materials in dwellings and workplaces is mainly caused by the activity concentrations of short lived 222Radon and its progenies which arise from the decay of 226Ra. In this study, the indoor radon concentration emanating from cement brick, red-clay brick, gravel aggregate and Portland cement samples were measured in a homemade airtight radon chamber using continuous radon monitor 1029 model of Sun Nuclear. Radon monitor were left in the chamber for 96 hours with an hour counting time interval. From the result, the indoor radon concentrations for cement brick, red-clay brick, gravel aggregate and Portland cement samples determined were 396 Bq m−3, 192 Bq m−3, 176 Bq m−3 and 28 Bq m−3, respe...

Radiological risk assessment of environmental radon

Norafatin Khalid; Amran Ab. Majid; Redzuwan Yahaya; Muhammad Samudi Yasir

Measurements of radon gas (222Rn) in the environmental are important to assess indoor air quality and to study the potential risk to human health. Generally known that exposure to radon is considered the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The environmental radon concentration depends on the 226Ra concentration, indoor atmosphere, cracking on rocks and building materials. This study was carried out to determine the indoor radon concentration from selected samples of tin tailings (amang) and building materials in an airtight sealed homemade radon chamber. The radiological risk assessment for radon gas was also calculated based on the annual exposure dose, effective dose equivalent, radon exhalation rates and fatal cancer risk. The continuous radon monitor Sun Nuclear model 1029 was used to measure the radon concentration emanates from selected samples for 96 hours. Five types of tin tailings collected from Kampar, Perak and four samples of building materials commonly used in Malaysia dwellin...
