Adolescent growth changes in the nose were studied for 140 female and 140 male subjects between the ages of 11 and 17 years who had class 1 skeletal and dental patterns. Age-related growth changes in the bony and cartilaginous framework of the nose were evaluated. Nasal height and nasal bridge length became fully mature in males at 15 years and fully mature in females at 12 years. The upper nasal dorsum, lower nasal dorsum, anterior nasal depth, and posterior nasal depth exhibited continuous growth up to 14 years in males and 2 years earlier in females. Nasal tip protrusion approached its mature size in males at 15 years and at 13 years in females. Although the lower dorsum rotated forward slightly, rotation of the upper dorsum was not significant during adolescence. Knowledge of these age-related growth changes of the nose may be useful in planning the time of aesthetic or reconstructive nose surgery.

A patient with an intraorbital wooden foreign body is presented. A 43-year-old schizophrenic male patient purposely introduced a twig through his left medial canthus and into the orbital cavity 6 months before presentation. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-delineated intraorbital object that partially penetrated the ethmoidal sinus through the medial orbital wall. Under general anesthesia, a 55-mm-long and 6-mm-diameter twig was removed through an incision along the sulcus palpebromalaris. Thick capsule formation around the foreign body, fibrosis of the adjacent tissues, and severe infection were observed. Diagnosis and management of intraorbital foreign bodies are discussed.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a new method of evaluating velopharyngeal dysfunction. The anatomy of the palate and velopharyngeal closure can be visualized with MRI. Also, fast scanning with turboflash sequences allows surgeons to evaluate the speech mechanism during phonation. The dimensions of the velopharynx are another important factor in velopharyngeal closure, together with the functional performance of the soft palate during phonation. During this study, velopharyngeal anthropometric analyses were performed in cerebral MR images of 136 male and 141 female normal speakers who underwent cerebral MRI for reasons other than speech problems. Age-dependent changes in velopharyngeal dimensions were evaluated. Although the growth of the soft palate was continuous throughout life, hard palate growth ceased by age 15. By using anthropometric data available from MR images taken on normal subjects for other reasons, a large database of age-, gender-, and race-specific data on palatal and pharyngeal morphology was acquired. Comparative data of noncleft subjects in multiple age groups were obtained with MRI.

Abstract The disadvantages and limitations of imaging methods to investigate velopharyngeal incompetence have created some difficulties in the management of this condition. Seven normal volunteers and seven patients who were suffering from a speech disorder were examined using magnetic resonance imaging. The velopharyngeal aperture was evaluated at rest and during phonation. In normal volunteers, the velopharyngeal aperture area had a mean value of 1.632 cm2 while at rest and complete closure was obtained during the phonation of /s/ sound. Detailed information was obtained about the function of the levator palati muscle. In five patients during the phonation of /s/ sound there was an increase in the area of the velopharyngeal aperture when compared to the volunteers. Investigation with magnetic resonance imaging is helpful in the pretreatment evaluation and postopertive follow-up examination of velopharyngeal insufficiency. As a result, this noninvasive method can be used as an alternative to conventional radiological investigations.

Electrothrombosis is one of the methods of vascular occlusion that can be summarized as the formation of intravascular thrombosis by application of direct current to intravascularly placed electrodes. There are no studies utilizing electrothrombosis for the treatment of hemangiomas and vascular malformations, so we conducted a study consisting of an in vitro test, animal experiments and clinical applications. The formation of a thrombus was observed in the test tubes in which direct current was applied to the electrodes in the in vitro test. In the animal experiment group occlusion of femoral arteries in the rabbit model was achieved by electrothrombosis. Clinical applications were done in six patients with hemangiomas and six patients with vascular malformations. Success rates were 75% in hemangiomas and 58.3% in vascular malformations.

A patient with malignant mixed tumor of the parotid gland with myoepithelial carcinomatous and papillary cyst adenocarcinomatous components is presented. Clinically the patient had a giant mass in the parotid location for 20 years, with a growth progression during the last 6 months. The undefined connection of two carcinomatous components of malignant mixed tumor is reviewed.

A 7-year-old girl with a cervical midline pterygium and teratoma is presented. Pterygium (congenital webbing) of the skin is a rare congenital anomaly. Teratomas are tumors formed by pluripotential primordial germ cells that constitute heterogeneous types of tissues foreign to the organ from which they originate. The undefined connection of two conditions of pterygium and teratoma in the cervical region is reviewed in this case report.
