Evaluation of Globalization Strategies: External Analysis of the Turkish Clothing Industry

Selin Hanife Eryürük; Fatma Kalaoglu; Murat Baskak; A. Besoa Rabenasolo

In this article we present an external analysis of the Turkish clothing industry. Information on the companies was obtained by means of a questionnaire survey. Data were evaluated to see whether or not the Turkish clothing industry utilizes globalization market strategies, the important factors effective to implement these strategies, perceived problems, and execution of the strategies to compete in the global environment in addition to the modeling of the current situation of the strategies.

Integrating parts design characteristics and scheduling on parallel machines

Emre Cevikcan; M. Bulent Durmusoglu; Murat Baskak

Setup times have an important effect on providing quick response to the external besides internal customers. As well as eliminating setup activities, jobs with sequence-dependent setup times should be scheduled efficiently so as to reduce setup times. In this paper, a scheduling methodology which considers parts design characteristics is presented for parallel machines. With respect to the roadmap of the methodology, a parts design characteristics based scheduling algorithm is developed in order to reduce total setup times. When evaluating the performance of sequencing methods, the cable cutting-stripping-crimping (CSC) process of a real life wiring harness production system is focused. In the current scheduling system of CSC division, cable sequences are developed semi-manually by CSC supervisors. Making the proposed methodology compatible with cable sequencing, an expert system is developed so as to reduce the burden of supervisors and improve effectiveness. Performance comparison of scheduling algorithms is based on deviation from the lower bound for the total setup time as well as previously implemented semi-manual cable sequences. With respect to performance comparison, parts design characteristics based scheduling algorithm has resulted in 6.81% reduction of the total setup time compared to implemented semi-manual cable sequences (MCS) for 45-day production data.

To define service level in an integrated model for warehouse and inventory planning by utilizing heuristic solution: An example

Omer Faruk Yilmaz; Murat Baskak; Hikmet Erbıyık

The main objective of this study is to define service level equation with a different approach in the forward-reserve models. In this article within the forward-reserve model, in order to ensure service level optimization, a heuristic sequential solution procedure is proposed. A global model is presented and solved for evaluating and decision making of warehouse and inventory decisions. The proposed method is related to service level and inventory decisions as well as warehouse decisions and shortage cost. Two stages are followed with the proposed method. While in the first stage inventory decisions along with the constant service level decision being taken in the second part the results obtained in the first stage being kept constant and with this regard warehouse decisions being taken. Since the main purpose in this article is to develop a new equation for a service level, the results of the second stage are not shown in detail. It has been shown with an application of a real example that we could reach the solution in less time for the new developed service level equation comparing to simple service level search procedure. The main contribution of this study to literature is to develop a new service level equation for forward-reserve models.

Etek Üretimi Yapan Bir Konfeksiyon İşletmesinde Montaj Hattı Dengeleme Çalışması

Selin Hanife Eryürük; Fatma Kalaoğlu; Murat Baskak

Assembly lines are production systems developed to meet the requirements of mankind. The main aim is to produce high demand products within the shortest time limits, in the most productive and cheap way with high quality. Assembly line balancing problem can be considered as a difficult optimization problem and today still some heuristic methods are needed to solve large scale assembly line balancing problems. In this study, heuristic assembly line balancing technique known as the “Ranked Positional Weight Technique”, developed by Helgeson and Birnie was applied to balance assembly line balancing in a skirt production company
