Discrimination areas in higher education institutions in Turkey and a scale development study

Murat Kasimoglu; Ali Halici

Despite legal and administrative arrangements and increase in the sensitiveness for human rights, discriminative applications are important problems in organizations, because different applications and unfair behaviors for workers lead to negative consequences for the workers and the organization. The main discrimination areas that are stated in the literature are race, language, religion, sex, ideology and physical insufficiency etc., but these subjects would differ according to the region and sector. The aim of this study is to determine the discrimination areas in higher education Institutions in Turkey and develop a scale for measuring the level of discrimination in those areas. Discrimination areas are determined by an ethnographic study in the research. Within this context, factor analysis was applied to the related questions by Varimax approach and a reliable and valid scale was obtained.

Niche overlap – competition and homogeneity in the organizational clusters of hotel population

Murat Kasimoglu; Bahattin Hamarat

Competition and attempts to increase market share between organizations play an important role in business ecology. It has been determined that intensity in the institutions and death among organizations especially are of great importance. Intensity and homogeny among the organizational population are very important in the evolutionary process for them to create modern forms of institution. We have used parametric variables to collect a set of data in order to understand competition and niche among organization population. The study investigates how competition and niche affect the cluster of hotel population and their survivability. The founding of each hotel organization is differently constructed internally and different segments of the hotel population respond heterogeneously to the general process of competition. The findings show how niche and different segments of hotel population affect new organizational establishment and the evolutionary dynamics of modern organization structure, using the city center hotels of Canakkale in Turkey.

This research is the last stage of a four‐stage study.Design/methodology/approach – In the first part of the study, the areas of discrimination in universities were determined using approaches related to general discrimination mentioned in the literature. In the second part, a survey was developed to measure the areas of discrimination determined by ethnographic research. In the course of the third part of the study, the discrimination level directed at academic staff in higher education in Turkey was determined. In this last part of the research, the discrimination level in Azerbaijan is analyzed and compared with the results gathered in Turkey. In order to increase the rate of reply to the survey questions, a web page was included in the Baskent University web site (see www.baskent.edu.tr/ ∼ anket) which targeted people were asked to reply to. A total of 220 ins...

An investigation into the death of organisations from old age in Turkey

Murat Kasimoglu

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine the models which are used to analyse organisations as evolutionary adaptations to their environment.Design/methodology/approach – This study uses empirical data on the survival of business organisations in the Canakkkale region of Turkey to investigate the probability that they will cease to exist in any period of their operation.Findings – There are indications of the effects predicted by both approaches; companies face heightened risk of death in three stages of their life.Research limitations/implications – The number of companies in the study is small, and consequently the results have to be viewed with caution.Originality/value – This study shows how information about actual organisations can be used effectively.
