BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF BORON

Boron, which bears the symbol B in the periodical table, is a semiconductive element with properties between that of a metal and a nonmetal (Kilic et al. 2009). This micro-mineral is ingested with foods on a daily basis, and the amount taken in varies with the levels that occur in the consumed food and drink (Sabuncuoglu et al. 2006). This element is a chemically dynamic trace element that forms approximately 230 compounds, generally with other elements (World Health Organization 1998; Kilic et al. 2009).

Histological Evaluation of the Effects of Borax Obtained from Various Sources in Different Rat Organs

El boro es un elemento esencial para la vida e ingresa a traves de diferentes fuentes al cuerpo. Dado que los efectos del boro y sus compuestos en el cuerpo no se han estudiado lo suficiente, especialmente a nivel tisular, se planifico este estudio para evaluar sus efectos y la forma de consumo mas comun del compuesto de boro sobre diferentes organos intraabdominales a nivel histologico y clinico. Cuarenta y dos ratas macho divididas en 7 grupos, con diferentes dosis toxicologicas de acuerdo con su dosis DL50 (5000 mg/kg/d) administradas por sonda, excepto en los grupos control y simulado. En el estudio fueron usados 2 tipos diferentes de boro, uno producido para la investigacion y el otro para la agricultura, pero de la misma formulacion, y sus efectos fueron comparados. Se encontro que el boro no causo cambios histologicos en el rinon, intestino grueso, higado y estomago en dosis bajas. Sin embargo, al aumentar la dosis, se detecto una leve migracion de celulas inflamatorias, sin signos clinicos, en el higado e intestino grueso. Por otra parte, cuando se administro una sola dosis muy alta de boro, se observo un amplio edema, migracion de celulas inflamatorias y neovascularizacion; clinicamente 2 de 6 ratas murieron dentro de 5 horas. Sugerimos que la ingesta de dosis muy altas de borax pueden causar la muerte subita, ademas la ingesta de dosis altas y durante periodos de tiempo prolongado puede causar enfermedades inflamatorias del intestino. Es recomendable que en los estudios relacionados con el boro, el tipo de boro asi como su fuente sean evaluados cuidadosamente, eligiendo el compuesto mas adecuado en caso de resultados erroneos.

Subgross and macroscopic investigation of the coeliac artery in the chinchilla (chinchilla lanigera).

The knowledge of branching and variations of the coeliac artery is clinically important, especially in the surgical operations and non-surgical treatments.Moreover, the chinchillas abdominal region have been used as a model in some surgical experimental researches. In this frame, we have aimed to explain the branching of this artery in the chinchillas detailedly. A total of 10 adult, healthy,male chinchillas (chinchilla lanigera) were used to investigate the origin and the course of the coeliac artery and its branches. Coloured latex was injected into the carotid arteries, following conventional anatomical applications. The results indicated that the coeliac artery was divided into 4 branches such as left gastricartery, hepatic artery, splenic artery and gastrolienal artery. The left gastric artery was a continuity of the coeliac artery and the main vessel of the stomach. The hepatic artery was divided into the left lateral branch, the left medial branch and the right branch. The splenic artery was covered by the pancreas tissue and sent branches to the pancreas. The gastrolienal artery was supplying the fundus of the stomach and the dorsal extremity of the spleen. We believe that the findings will be of help to the researchers interested in the anatomical area, surgeons and experimental researches.

Investigating The Effects of Veterinary Medicine Students’ Learning By Using The Real Skeleton Models on Anatomy Theorical and Practical Lessons

Veteriner anatomi egitiminde teknolojik gelismeler de goz onune alinarak bilgisayar destekli simulasyon ve plastik modeller gibi modern ve alternatif egitim araclarinin kullanimi yaygin hale gelmistir. Ancak bu alternatif egitim araclari anatomi egitimi sirasinda canli vucudundaki gercek detaylari ya da olasi varyasyonlari gostermeleri acisindan tek baslarina yeterli olmamaktadir. Bu calismada geleneksel egitim araclarindan olan gercek iskelet modellerinin ogrencilerin ogrenimleri uzerine etkisini inceledik. Calismamizda Mehmet Akif Ersoy Universitesi Veteriner Fakultesi Anatomi Anabilim Dali’ndan temin edilen gercek iskelet modelleri Anatomi I dersinde Lokomotor Sistem konularinda uygulama derslerinde kullanildi. Modellerin etkinligini ve ogrenci beklentilerini olcmek icin 32 maddeden olusan Likert tipi tutum olcegi gelistirildi. Olcekteki maddeler “motivasyon”, “ogrenme-anlama” ve “gelecekte bilgiyi kullanma” boyutlari olarak alt gruplara ayrilarak degerlendirildi. Tutum olcegi 2014-2015 ve 2015-2016 egitim-ogretim donemi ogrencilerine uygulandi. Elde edilen veriler SPSS 13.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) kullanilarak cozumlendi. Verilerin analizinde aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma ve bagimsiz gruplar t testi uygulandi. Olcek sonuclarinda “motivasyon” boyutunda yer alan toplam 11 gorusun tutum puanlarinin tamaminin aritmetik ortalamasinin 4,32 oldugu goruldu. “Ogrenme-anlama” boyutunda yer alan toplam 16 gorusun tutum puanlarinin tamaminin aritmetik ortalamasi ise 4,47 olarak bulundu. Degerler, ogrencilerin modern egitim araclarinin yaninda geleneksel bir egitim araci olan gercek iskeletlerin de kullanilmasini istediklerini ve kullanilan bu modellerin “motivasyon” ve “ogrenme-anlama” boyutunda faydali oldugunu dusundukleri seklinde yorumlandi. “Gelecekte bilgiyi kullanma” boyutuna iliskin toplam 5 gorusun aritmetik ortalamasi sirasiyla 4,26’dir. Sonuclar ogrencilerin egitim surecinde kullanilan gercek iskelet modelleri ile ogrendiklerini daha iyi ve etkili aktarabileceklerini dusunduklerini gostermektedir. Sonuc olarak, plastik modeller ve bilgisayar destekli simulasyonlar gibi modern egitim araclari, geleneksel egitim araclarinin yaninda alternatif olabilirler. Ancak bu egitim araclari hayvan kadavralarindan elde edilmis gercek materyaller kadar varyasyon ve detaylari yansitmadigindan, bunlari tek basina etkin bir egitim araci olarak degerlendirmek dogru degildir. Bundan dolayi modern egitim araclarinin yaninda gercek iskelet modelleri gibi canli hayvandan elde edilmis geleneksel egitim araclari Anatomi egitiminde kendine her zaman yer bulacaktir.

Morphological, Stereological and Histometrical Assessment of the Testicular Parameters between Holstein and Simmental Bulls

La medicion testicular es un criterio importante para las investigaciones experimentales sobre todo en los estudios toxicologicos y prediccion de la espermatogenesis. El objetivo fue estimar y comparar estos parametros en dos diferentes tipos de razas de ganado. Las mediciones anatomicas fueron realizadas con un pie de metro, el volumen de los testiculos se estimo por el metodo de Cavalieri y el diametro de los tubulos seminiferos se midio en las secciones histologicas observadas al microscopio mediante software. La Media del peso testicular, longitud, ancho, volumen y diametro de los tubulos seminiferos de los toros Simmental fueron 316 g, 12,1 cm, 6,9 cm, 295 cm3 y 226,68 µm y de los toros Holstein fueron 299 g, 12,1 cm, 6,8 cm, 285 cm3 y 223,44 µm, respectivamente. En conclusion, todos los parametros investigados no tuvieron una importante significacion en los grupos y entre las razas (p> 0,05). Creemos que los datos obtenidos contribuiran a la literatura y facilitar las futuras investigaciones.

Effect of Photoperiod and Melatonin on Volume and Cellular Parameters of Testis in Pinealectomized Rats

El eje reproductivo de los mamiferos esta regulado por la combinacion de tres tejidos fundamentales del sistema neuroendocrino, incluyendo el hipotalamo, hipofisis y las gonadas. En los ultimos anos, la glandula pineal se ha incluido en este eje. El objetivo fue investigar el efecto del fotoperiodo 12L (Luz):12O (oscuridad) y la administracion de melatonina (0,5 mg/kg/dia, via subcutanea) sobre el volumen testicular y los parametros celulares del testiculo en ratas pinealectomizadas (RP). Doce ratas adultas fueron pinealectomizadas y divididas en dos grupos, GI y GII de manera aleatoria. Las ratas del GI sirvieron como grupo de control y recibieron solo solucion salina normal, mientras que a las ratas del GII se les administro melatonina. Se encontro que el volumen total, diametro y altura del epitelio de los tubulos seminiferos de los testiculos, y el numero y diametro nuclear de las celulas intersticiales se incrementaron en el GII. Sin embargo, el aumento en el numero de las celulas intersticiales no fue significativo entre los grupos. En conclusion, se observo que el fotoperiodo 12L:12O y la dosis administrada de melatonina aumentan los parametros investigados en RP.
