The effect of cypermethrin on some haematological parameters of Cyprinus carpio

Mustafa Dörücü; Asiye Girgin

There is no doubt that like all living organisms in water, fish are alsoaffected by alterations in their environmental conditions. To determine theeffects of disease and unsuitable environmental conditions on fish, the normalhaematological parameters have been investigated. It is known that diseases, pollution and the presence of agricultural chemicals in water cause changesin blood cells of fish resulting in losses to aquaculture. Insect and snailpests are extensively controlled by using organic pesticides which are aserious environmental hazard (Singhand and Agarwal, 1993). Common useof these pesticides by methods like crop dusting, orchard and forest sprayingor mosquito control means that some inevitable enter aquatic ecosystems. It is necessary to know the effects of these broad spectrum pesticides onaquatic organisms (Elliot, 1977; Casida et al., 1983). Synthetic pyrethroidscame after organochlorines and carbamates and organophosphates becamepopular not only because of their efficacy but also due to their relatively fasterbiodegradability and low mammalian toxicity (Khan, 1983).In the area where this study was conducted cypermethrin is commonlyused for the control of insects in agriculture close to fish farms and lakestherefore it may get into these water bodies. The aim of this study wasto investigate the effect of sublethal concentration of cypermethrin onhaematological parameters of

Efficacy of lipopolysaccharide antigen of Yersinia ruckeri in rainbow trout by intraperitoneal and bath immersion administration.

Ünal Ispir; Mustafa Dörücü

In this study, Intraperitoneal (IP) and bath immersion (BI) vaccine trials were conducted in fish with a mean weight of 6.3 g. Rainbow trout vaccinated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was 50 mg/L protein concentration and challenged by IP injection with 9.8 × 10(6) cell/ml of Yersinia ruckeri at 45 days post-immunization had a relative percent survival (RPS). To obtain an effective bath immersion vaccine against yersiniosis, LPS preparation was obtained from the Y. ruckeri and with the LPS antigen. After 28 and 60 days vaccinated fish with first and second immunizations by LPS were challenged via intraperitoneal injection with 9.8 × 10(6) cell/ml of Y. ruckeri for evaluating the mortality rates and calculating the relative percentage of survival (RPS). RPS value of experimental groups, which was significantly (P < 0.05) larger than that of the control group.

Observations on the ecology of the freshwater leech Helobdella stagnalis (Hirudinoidea: Glossiphoniidae), new for Turkey

Naim Saglam; Mustafa Dörücü

Abstract The freshwater leech Helobdella stagnalis was found in fish ponds and discharge channels at a Fisheries Research Station near Elazığ on the Upper Euphrates. It was identified on the basis of morphological features. The species had not previously been recorded in Turkey. The abundance of the species was highest (1.3±0.07 leeches/m²) in August and lowest (0.2 leeches/m²) in February.

[SEASONAL CHANGES IN CESTODE INFECTION OF CYCLOPS VICINUS ULJANIN, 1875 (COPEPODA, CYCLOPOIDA) IN LAKE HAZAR (ELAZIĞ, TURKEY), SEASONAL CHANGES IN CESTODE INFECTION OF CYCLOPS VICINUS ULJANIN, 1875 (COPEPODA, CYCLOPOIDA) IN LAKE HAZAR (ELAZIĞ, TURKEY)]

Mustafa Dörücü

In this study, the seasonal variation of natural levels of infection in Cyclops vicinus Uljanin, 1875 with procercoids of cestodes was examined in Lake Hazar, Turkey from November 2005 to October 2006. The prevalence of infected C. vicinus was found to increase with water temperature ( p 0.01); a peak occurred in September, while relatively low levels were recorded between November and March. No statistically significant relation was determined between infection and pH values ( p > 0.05). However, a statistically significant, negative correlation was found between infection and dissolved O 2 level ( p 0.05). Each infected Cyclops carried only one procercoid.
