Marital status, pregnancy planning, and role overload: a mediated-moderation model of parenting satisfaction.

Mylène Lachance-Grzela; Geneviève Bouchard

This longitudinal study investigated the presence of a moderating effect of pregnancy planning on the relationship between marital status and parenting satisfaction of couples experiencing the transition to parenthood and verified whether this moderating effect is mediated by role overload. Data were collected from 150 Canadian couples during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy and at 9 months postpartum. Findings reveal that when the pregnancy is planned, the poorer parenting satisfaction reported by cohabiting fathers in comparison with their married counterparts can be explained by cohabiting mens higher levels of role overload. Womens levels of parenting satisfaction are also influenced by their own and their partners experiences of role overload. Results are discussed in terms of the respective values and lifestyles of cohabiting and married couples and specifically in terms of their different attitudes toward egalitarianism.

Parental intervention style and adult sibling conflicts: The mediating role of involvement in sibling bullying

Geneviève Bouchard; Andréanne Plamondon; Mylène Lachance-Grzela

Managing conflicts and aggressive behaviors between siblings is challenging for many parents, and parental responses to sibling conflict has been shown to influence the quality of children’s sibling interactions. Building on previous work on parental involvement in sibling conflict, the aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of sibling bullying perpetration and victimization during childhood and adolescence in the relationship between parental intervention styles and conflicts in young adults’ sibling relationships. A sample of 302 individuals aged 17–33 years participated in the study. Results of structural equation modeling confirmed the proposed mediation model of young adults’ sibling conflicts. More precisely, parental control and parental noninvolvement were positively associated with experiences of sibling bullying perpetration and victimization, whereas parental coaching was associated with lower reports of sibling victimization. Involvement in sibling bullying during childhood and adolescence was, for its part, associated with sibling conflicts in young adulthood. Results of the current study confirmed that parenting intervention styles can influence children’s involvement in sibling bullying, which in turn, can predict conflicts in adult sibling relationships. In line with the family system theory, these results underline that parents can inadvertently play a role in the development of dysfunctional sibling relationships.

The Effects of Parental Divorce in Single and Romantically Involved Emerging Adults

Mylène Lachance-Grzela; Geneviève Bouchard

ABSTRACT This study, based on a sample of 572 individuals, verified the impact of parental divorce on beliefs toward marriage and divorce, expectations of future relationship success, and marital intentions among single and romantically involved emerging adults. Findings revealed that, in comparison with singles from divorced families, singles from intact families were more likely to report positive views of marriage and to believe that divorce is avoidable. Conversely, beliefs toward marriage and divorce of romantically involved individuals were similar, whether these latter grew up in intact or nonintact families. Finally, for all emerging adults, relational beliefs were associated with relationship expectations and marital intentions.
