System on Chip Design of Embedded Controller for Car Black Box

Se Myoung Jung; Myoung Seob Lim

This paper describes the design process of Car Black Box system IC. As x by wire is introduced to the several part in vehicle, the demand of automotive semiconductors are increasing. Because it will be mandatory for every car to be equipped with Car Black Box, it is expected that many ICs for Car Black Box also will be integrated. Unlike general electronic control units (ECUs) as PCB or module, car black box implemented on a single chip can reduce its size, power consumption and the cost. So the topic of this paper is to develop the Embedded controller for Car Black Box using SoC (System on Chip) technique. System on Chip (SoC) is the effective method to implement embedded system like car black box, which consists of processor, memory, I/O peripheral and several interfaces. SoC for Car Black Box system consists of 8051 processor, CAN (Controller Area Network) controller, JPEG compressor, SD controller for dumping the data from memory buffer to SD card, ROM for programming and SRAM acting as memory buffer. Describing the design process in the hardware and software, it was shown in the verification using MFC(Microsoft Foundation Class) program whether the required data such as image, location and other vehicle control status information was recorded and recovered.

A Novel Equalizer Structure for Direct Sequence Ultra Wideband (DS-UWB) System

Jin Ren; Myoung Seob Lim

In this paper we present a transceiver scheme based on a novel equalizer for indoor DS-UWB systems. The proposed scheme consists of a transmitter, a receiver with a novel equalizer which can reduce the overhead during the training phase and reduce the computation complexity without inducing loss of the BER performance. Furthermore, we evaluate performance on convergence rate, complexity and robustness for adaptive algorithm, and then compare the proposed scheme with the conventional structure under the realistic IEEE 802.15.3a channel model. Simulation results support the theoretical analysis and show that the proposed scheme can achieve higher throughput than a conventional one without loss of BER performance.

Alamouti transmit diversity scheme with a simple diagonal weighting matrix

Jiaen Li; Myoung Seob Lim

In this paper, a novel scenario of the Alamoutis space-time block code (STBC) system combined with a simple diagonal weighting matrix is presented. The diagonal weighting matrix is performed at the transmitter, dependent on the channel state information (CSI) which is obtained by using a feedback link. The signal can be decoded by updating the channel gain which was changed due to the weighting effect at each of two transmitters based on feedback information. The BER performance analysis about the decoded signal using the above scheme was derived theoretically and was shown to be better 1.3 dB than the Alamoutis STBC transmit diversity with open loop scheme

A transmit antenna selection diversity scheme for wireless communications

Jiaen Li; Myoung Seob Lim

This paper presents a simple diversity scheme by selecting the transmit antennas according to the feedback channel state information. Compare with the simple transmit diversity scheme using two transmit antennas and one receive antenna (STD/spl I.bar/2Tx1Rx), it obtains better performance of 1.5 dB and requires almost half radiated power.

Combined beamforming with space-time block coding using double antenna array group

Fan Zhu; Kyung Sik Ryu; Myoung Seob Lim

The performance of the combined beamforming of space-time block coding according to the number of antenna array group was analyzed. CB STBC single array and CB STBC double array were compared under the conditions of DOA and SNR. The CB STBC double array is shown to have a stable performance independent of DOA and angular spread.

Novel Symbol Timing Recovery Algorithm for Multi-level Signal

Kwang Ho Chun; Myoung Seob Lim

A new algorithm for detection of symbol timing error for Multi-level PAM signal, where two samples per symbol, xn − − 1/2 and xn + 1/2 , around the nth symbol sample, xn , are weighted respectively by the gradient between xn and xn + 1, and between xn and xn − − 1 , is proposed. The S-curve to verify the timing error control using this newly proposed algorithm is drawn. Also, the mean and variance of timing error function are derived for the performance analysis and it is shown that the new algorithm outperforms the Gardner’s one.

Performance analysis of balanced QPSK DS-CDMA system using Hilbert transformed PN code

Myoung Seob Lim

It is necessary to apply the bandwidth efficient SSB (single side-band) modulation scheme to DS-CDMA in order to increase the capacity of mobile communication systems with limited bandwidth resources. The balanced QPSK DS-CDMA signal with SSB is generated using inphase PN code and its Hilbert transformed quadrature PN code. The phase estimation structure, using orthogonality between inphase PN code and its Hilbert transformed quadrature PN code, makes it possible for coherent demodulation without pilot aid. Multiple access interference of balanced-QPSK DS/CDMA with SSB are analyzed to be equal to balanced-QPSK DS/CDMA with DSB and bit error rate, phase error variance and PDF of relative amplitude of MAI, are shown to be nearly equal to the DSB balanced-QPSK DS-CDMA system through computer simulation.

The capacity analysis of SSB/BPSK-DS/CDMA with a successive interference canceller

Myoung Seob Lim

It is necessary to apply SSB modulation to the DS/CDMA mobile communication systems in order to meet the increasing number of voice users as well as the broadband high rate data service in the future. However while the bandwidth efficiency is increased with SSB modulation, the performance gets degraded because of the increased multiple access interference. Therefore for solving this problem, SSB/BPSK-DS/CDMA with SIC is proposed and we showed that it can accommodate more capacity than the conventional BPSK-DS/CDMA with SIC.
