“Refusing to compromise” is included in Websters definition of intransigent. But does that really describe what is happening within the MI patient who will not stay in bed or the diabetic patient who will not resist a surgary doughnut? This author invites us to look at what has shaped our attitudes and placed fences between us and our “intransigent” patients. Perhaps we must reexamine our expectations of what therapy offers to the patient, for adherence to a therapeutic regimen does not yet guarantee immortality, and we should not behave as though we thought it did.
