Chrysanthemum is a major floriculture species and a breeding goal is to develop cultivars with unique flower forms and colors. This study was conducted to investigate the genetic basis of six flower traits including petal color, flower shape, ray floret length, the level of ray floret twisting, the shape of the ray floret tips, and the attitude of the basal part of the ray florets. A pseudo-testcross population derived from a cross between the ‘Falcao’ and ‘Frill Green’ cultivars was used. The female parent ‘Falcao’ is a popular pompon type that has an orange-pink color and lacks twisted ray florets. The male parent ‘Frill Green’ is a single type with green twisted ray florets. For color, six different colors were observed in 130 progeny: white, yellow, green, orange, orange-pink, and pink and 52 (40%) and 52 (40%) progeny showed green and yellow colors, respectively. The progeny was grouped into 4 classes based on flower form. The semi-double class was the most frequent (70%) in the population, suggesting an incomplete dominance for the double and single flower. Among four ray floret traits, the shape of the ray floret tips seems to be controlled by a single gene, while the level of twisting of the ray floret showed a significant deviation from the expected 3:1 or 1:1 ratio (p < 0.05). The progeny were divided into three classes in terms of the attitude of the basal part of the ray florets (ascending, descending, and horizontal). Four and three progeny for green pompon or green double flowers were selected, respectively. Two of the four green pompon selections have twisted ray florets. These results will help breeders for developing new chrysanthemum cultivars with unique flower forms and colors.

The study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of flower quality and yield of gerbera ‘Sunny Lemon’ by mutrient solution strength and media of nutrient solution. The plant growth of ‘Sunny Lemon’ showed the highest values in the media of rockwool and perlite 1: peatmoss 2. Especially the yield of cut flowers for a year was more than 60 flowers and the flower longevity was over 10 days irrespective of nutrient solution concentration in the two media. There were no significant differences of plant characteristics in the nutrient concentration of 1/2 and 1 times, and the mineral nutrient contents showed similar values. Therefore, we recommended the media of perlite1: peatmoss2 with the concentration of 1/2 times for economical use. The rockwool media was not appropriate because of the weak buffer capacity like EC and pH. Key words:

Abstract: This study was conducted to improve the consumption of floriculture plants by researching preferences of consumers for the main types of cut flowers. We analyzed the results of surveys, carried out by a company, that were largely about roses, chrysanthemums, and lilies. After departmentalizing consumers into groups and analyzing the results through conjoint and cluste r analysis, we found that consumers showed a higher rate of use based on price and vase life than on flower color and flower shape in roses. The groups of rose consumers preferred a price of 1000 won, spray type flower shape, vase life of 7-8 da ys, and red flower color. In chrysanthemums, consumers showed higher rate of use for flower color than for vase life, flower shape, and price. The groups of chrysanthemum consumers preferred a price of 1000 won, standard flower shape, 16-20 days vase life, and yellow flower color. In lilies, consumers showed higher use rate for flower shape than vase life, price, and flower color. Lily consumers preferred a price of 2000 won, large flower shape, 4-7 days vase life, and yellow flower color. Thus, the major cut flowers (rose, chrysanthemum, and lily) all showed highest use rates in for vase life. These results highlight th e importance of understanding the characteristics of consumer interests. They also emphasize that we should plan and create market-oriented and consumer-oriented products to improve the consumption of floriculture plants.Additional key words:
