N. D. Datta Banik; R. Krishna; S. I. S. Mane; Lila Raj

SummaryThis report deals with the study of longitudinal growth of pre-school children from different socio-economic classes in the urban community of Delhi. The role of socio-economic factors which affect the growth standards of weight, height, circumference of head, chest, arm, calf and pelvic width of these children at different ages from birth up to 5 years is discussed. It is observed that in malnutrition resulting from an adverse effect of poor socio-economic status, all measurements of the body are affected, the height and the head being the least and the weight, the circumferences of the chest, arm and calf the most.

N. D. Datta Banik; R. Krishna; S. I. S. Mane; Lila Raj

SummaryEighty-one cases with marasmic kwashiorkor were found during a longitudinal study of 7493 pre-school children in an urban community at Delhi. It was observed that the major casuative factors for the variation in the clinical features of protein calorie malnutrition between South and North Indian preschool children were the types of weaning diets differing in protein and caloric content. The relationship between malnutrition and infections and infestations is enumerated. The relationship between malnutrition and somatic growth is elucidated. An extensive nutrition education programme for the prevention and control of protein calorie malnutrition among pre-school children with a liaison between the survey teams, M.C.H. clinics and hospitals is discussed.
