Abstract The possibility of construction of an adjustable quarter-wave plate made of two birefringent plates with arbitrary thicknesses is considered theoretically and realized experimentally.

An adjustable construction of a half-wave plate is described. The device consists of three birefringent plates with arbitrary thicknesses. Owing to the variable angles between the optical axes of these plates, it could be easily adjusted to a different wavelength of laser radiation.

Abstract An algorithm similar to the one of Gerchberg-Saxton is discussed. The one-dimensional intensity profiles in two arbitrary cross-sections of a laser beam are required for phase retrieval. The numerical results of the phase recovering from experimental data are presented.

The position of a focal spot after transmission of a plane circularly polarized wave (ex+i sigma egamma ) exp(ikz) through the half of a lens ( gamma >0) was investigated. The transverse shift Delta x approximately +or- sigma was found experimentally under switching of the sign of sigma . This effect is considered as the manifestation of spin-orbit interaction of a photon.

Is it possible to achieve wavelength-independent transformation of the polarization of light on the basis of adiabatic tracking of smooth variation in the parameters of the medium by the polarization? This question is considered for conditions where circularly polarized light is converted into linearly polarized light.

The theoretical and experimental investigation of behaviour of the longitudinal section of an optical fibre under its coiling have been performed. It have been shown that the angle of rotation of that section coincides with the angle of rotation of polarization plane of the light transmitted through that fibre.
