Paris polyphylla J.E. Smith is extensively used in traditional systems of Indian and Chinese medicines mainly for its anticancerous property. The national and international demand for P. polyphylla is constantly increasing and most of the supplies come from wild. Illegal and unscientific exploitation coupled with habitat destruction decreases the natural population of the herb, as a consequence this species comes under vulnerable category. Restoration and conservation of the natural population of this potential herb is prerequisites. This article aims to provide an overview on chemical and biological prospective of P. polyphylla. Secondary metabolites such as daucosterol, polyphyllin D, β -ecdysterone, Paris saponins I, II, V, VI, VII, H, dioscin, oligosaccharides, heptasaccharide, octasaccharide, trigofoenoside A, protogracillin, Paris yunnanosides G-J, padelaoside B, pinnatasterone, formosanin C and 20-hydroxyecdyson saponins have been isolated from P. polyphylla. Several biological activities such as anticancerous, antitumor, cytotoxic, anthelmintic, antimicrobial, antiangiogenic, immunostimulating, contractile and hemostatic have also been reported. Consequently, this review will be helpful to the researcher and scientist for further research.

The Er3+ doped and Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped LaAlO3 phosphors have been synthesized by the combustion method and characterized their structural, morphological, elemental, vibrational and optical properties. The optical absorption and upconversion properties of the synthesized phosphors have been studied. Upon co-doping Yb3+ ions into Er3+:LaAlO3, the blue, green and red upconversion emissions of Er3+ ions have been enhanced about ~20, ~54 and ~22 times, under 978nm laser excitation. The observed upconversion emissions could be due to excited state absorption in Er3+:LaAlO3, whereas energy transfer is dominant mechanism in Er3+/Yb3+:LaAlO3 phosphors. The tuning in the color emitted from the synthesized phosphors towards the green region has been found due to incorporation of the Yb3+ ions. With increase in the pump power, the color emitted from the co-doped phosphor is not tuned significantly, showing its applicability in making the green display devices.

Fe doped CeO2 powder was prepared using solution combustion method. Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy methods are used to characterize the combustion derived powder. The optical absorption spectrum exhibits three bands due to Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of this sample exhibits number of resonance signals due to Fe3+ ions. The number of spins (N) participating in resonance and its paramagnetic susceptibility (χ) has been evaluated. From EPR and optical studies it is observed that iron ions are present in trivalent state.
