Abstract Condensation reactions of dialdehydes and naphthols have been carried out and the structures of the products have been investigated. Naphthofuronaphthofuran type compounds have been obtained in the case of using glyoxal and 2-naphthol or dihydroxynaphthalenes. Malonaldehyde and glutaraldehyde have resulted methano and propano-dinaphtho[1,3]dioxocins respectively. In the case of 2-thionaphthol, different to those obtained from 2-naphthol and dihydroxynaphthalenes, naphthothiophene and naphthothiopyran derivatives have been isolated. Mechanisms of the reactions and the difference between the products have been discussed.

Abstract Poly(dioxepin–maleic anhydride) copolymers containing some new functional groups were prepared on the reaction of free radical polymerisation of dioxepines with maleic anhydride in toluene at 80°C. The copolymers obtained were characterised with FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectra. Inherent viscosities of copolymers were measured.

Polycondensation of biphenols such as 2,2-di(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, 1-phenyl-1,1-di(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethane, 1,1-di(4-hydroxyphenyl) cyclohexane and dihydroxynaphthalenes with glyoxal resulted in a ladder type of polymers. The structures of the ladder polymers were elucidated by FTIR and 1H-NMR.

SummaryA new method is described for the production of macroporous beads by copolymerization of styrene and divinylbenzene initiated by azo linked polytetrahydrofuran, which was obtained by silver salt-diacid chloride technique. Swelling properties of the beads in various solvents were studied.

Ladder polymers were synthesized by reaction of dihydroxynaphthalene and bisphenols with malondialdehyde and glutardialdehyde. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to determine the thermal behaviour of the polymers, and conductivities of two representative polymers were measured. Ladder polymers with higher molecular weights showed better thermal resistance.

Microporous metal-imidazolate framework (MMIF), a highly CO2 selective MOF, was incoporated into a polymeric membrane for separation of CO2 from CH4 and N2 for the first time. MMIF nanoparticles of 50-200 nm were synthesized using the sonication method and dispersed into Matrimid, a commercial polyimide, with MOF loading of 10% and 20% by weight to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Morphology, thermal behavior, and glass transition temperature of the membranes were characterized, and single and mixed gas permeation measurements at 35 °C and 4 bar feed pressure were carried out to reveal their separation performance. Both 10% and 20% MMIF containing Matrimid membranes exhibited enhanced gas permeabilities for all three gases. Contrary to expectations, ideal selectivity of membranes was not improved possibly due to the flexible framework of MMIF. On the other hand, mixed gas permeability measurements showed significant improvement in CO2/CH4 separation factor by 130% and CO2/N2 separation factor by 79% due to competitive adsorption favoring CO2.

Condensation reaction of carbonyl compounds [ glyoxal, 1,3-dihydroxyacetone and l,3-bis-(hydroxymethyl) acetone ] with hydroxyaromatic compounds have been carried out and the structures of the products have been investigated. Naphthofuranonaphthofuran is modified by adding the functional groups which have been chosen from the compounds used for cancer and AIDS chemotherapy. Introduction In our recent reports we have described the synthesis of naphthofuranonaphthofuran (1) and naphthopyranonaphthopyran (2) derivatives via the condensation reactions between carbonyl compounds with 2-naphthol and its derivatives. (scheme 1) Some of the above mentioned product types have been tested for their potential anti-cancer and anti-HIV properties at the National Cancer Institute USA. However, only very weak biological activities have been observed.
