Aim. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of aerobic exercise training and yoga on the functional capacity, peripheral muscle strength, quality of life (QOL), and fatigue in breast cancer survivors. Material and methods. A total of 52 patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer were included in the study. The patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups: aerobic exercise (n = 28) and yoga added to aerobic exercise (n = 24). Both groups participated in submaximal exercise 30 minutes/d, 3 d/wk for 6 weeks. The second group participated in a 1-hour yoga program in addition to aerobic exercise training. Functional capacity was assessed by the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). Peripheral muscle strength was evaluated with a hand-held dynamometer. The fatigue severity level was assessed with the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). The QOL was determined by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire. Results. There were statistically significant increases in peripheral muscle strength, the 6MWT distance, and the perception of QOL in both groups (P < .05). Additionally, the group with aerobic exercise and yoga showed marked improvement compared with the aerobic exercise group in fatigue perception (P < .05). Conclusion. According to the data from this study, aerobic exercise training and yoga improved the functional capacity and QOL of breast cancer patients. Aerobic exercise programs can be supported by body mind techniques, such as yoga, in the rehabilitation of cancer patients for improving functional recovery and psychosocial wellness.

O S T E R S mortality. ROC curve analysis was performed to detect the best cut-off value of NLR in the prediction of in-hospital mortality. Results: The mean age of the study population was 61 13.8 years (M: 30, F: 17). Twenty-eight patients underwent operation due to type A aortic dissection. The rest of the patients with chronic type B dissection were followed-up under medical treatment. Nine patients died during hospitalization; higher levels of NLR was observed in these patients compared to the patients who did survive (21.8 18.5 versus 8.1 5.6; p1⁄40.008). Twelve patients (26%) had pericardial effusion on admission and NLR was significantly higher in these patients than the patients wihout effusion (17.3 10.7 versus 9.7 11.8; p1⁄40.02). Multivariate analysis showed that age 65 years, aortic diameter 49 mm, pericardial effusion, history of smoking, systolic blood pressure <90 mmHg were associated with in-hospital mortality. NLR value > 8 yielded an AUC value of 0.795 (95% CI 0.623-0.966; p1⁄40.009) which demonstrated a sensitivity of 78% and specificity of 65 % for the prediction of mortality. Conclusıons: NLR may be associated with in-hospital cardiac events in patients with acute aortic dissection.

Effects of Yoga on Quality of Life and Pain in Geriatric Women with Low- Back Pain: A Pilot Study

Özlem Ülger; Naciye Vardar Yağlı

Objectives: The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of yoga on quality of life and pain in geriatric women with low-back pain. Design: Fifteen women (65-69 years old) with low-back pain were included in the present study. 12 sessions yoga program consisted of asanas, stretching exercises, breathing and relaxation techniques were given to geriatric women suffering from low-back pain twice a week for 6 weeks. Main outcome measures: The quality of life was assessed with Nothingham Health Profile and pain was determined before and after the study using Visual Analoque Scale. Results: After-sessions, the patients’ quality of life values were found to be statistically higher than the beforesession values (p<0.05). It was determined that the severity of pain decreased after yoga session (p<0.05). Discussion: The results showed that yoga has a positive effect on quality of life and pain severity of geriatric women with low-back pain. Therefore it is possible to use yoga programs as an alternative approach to solve problems such as poor quality of life and pain caused by low-back pain.
