Abstract We investigated the origin and absolute age of beachrock samples on Bozcaada Island, located on the northern Aegean Sea coast of Turkey, using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. Various types of cements were identified, such as micritic, meniscus, and biologic cements, revealing that the beachrock could have occurred as a result of the combined effects of marine-phreatic and supratidal cementation conditions. Optical dating results showed that the formation of beachrock ranged in age from 5.41 ± 0.58 ka BP to 0.33 ± 0.05 ka BP. However, much of the beachrock body (about 3 m in thickness) is drowned or submerged today, suggesting that submerged beachrocks extending to −5 m date to earlier times than the start of the cementation period discussed herein.

In the present study we report dosimetric properties of iodized salt aiming at using it as an accidental luminescent dosimeter. It was found that the very good sensitivity of its main dosimetric peak is strongly affected by thermal treatments. This is also the case for OSL emission. The sensitivity loss due to heating implies that caution should be exercised while applying single aliquot protocols for dose evaluation. The sequence of dissolution and subsequent re-crystallization was established to be an extremely effective zeroing mechanism for the TL signal. The linearity in the dose response was also monitored in the case of dissolved and subsequently re-crystallized salt. In the case of naturally occurring salt, zeroing of the TL signal due to dissolution as well as the linearity of dose response up to doses as large as 100 Gy were found to be very promising features for dating applications.

Component Resolved IR Bleaching Study of the Blue LM-OSL Signal of Various Quartz Samples The present work provides an initial component resolved analysis concerning the effect of infra-red (IR) exposure at elevated temperatures on the blue LM-OSL signal of quartz (stimulated at 470 nm). The study was performed on a total of seven quartz samples, among which five originated from Turkey, one from Greece and one synthetic quartz sample. For these quartz samples, the presence of 6 or even 7 independent LM-OSL components was previously reported, after the application of a computerized decomposition analysis. IR bleaching of each one of these components is studied and compared to the respective signal reduction due to the same thermal treatment solely. It is clearly demonstrated that IR stimulation at temperatures above 50°C does not deplete only the fast component in most sedimentary quartz samples studied. Net depletion of fast and medium components resulting from IR exposure is sample-dependent and occurs faster as the stimulation temperature increases. Weak IR bleaching of slow components is also reported in some cases, being more effective for stimulation temperatures up to 100°C. No depletion of either the medium or the slow components was detected for stimulation temperatures above 150°C. Finally, IR does not stimulate any of the LM-OSL components in the case of the synthetic quartz sample.

Abstract The aim of this study is to determine the trap parameters (trap depth E , frequency factor s ) of quartz using various heating rates method and also to investigate the effect of annealing temperature on determining trap depths. The method is based on the positions of the thermoluminescence peaks, obtained from the change in temperature of the peak at maximum caused by changing the heating rate at which the sample is measured. In the present work, powder quartz samples were annealed first at different temperatures before irradiation. Then samples irradiated to different doses were measured with a TL reader at different heating rates and the glow curves were recorded. In order to calculate the trap depth E and the frequency factor s , the glow parameter T m was determined experimentally from the glow curve by measuring the shift of the maximum peak temperature depending on heating rate β . The calculation of trap parameters was repeated for each annealing temperature. Then the effect of annealing temperature on trap depths calculated by the various heating rates method was evaluated.

Abstract In the present paper, eolianite exposed on the south coast of the semiarid island of Bozcaada, Turkey, was investigated on the basis of geomorphologic and petrographic data, and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating results. The eolianite is lithic arenite in composition and contains abundant quartz, calcite, and various lithoclasts amalgamated with micritic calcite, sparitic calcite, and meniscus cements. Within the youngest layers standing at 1–2 m above sea level, the rock contains rhizoliths with or without carbonaceous fills. The OSL ages obtained ranged between 24.21 ± 1.53 ka and 16.18 ± 1.70 ka, suggesting that eolianite constitutes an example of low stand deposits coinciding with oxygen isotope stage 2 (OIS-2).

We present new data on Holocene slip rates for the eastern end of the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) by using the optically stimulated luminescence ages of the offset terrace deposits at two sites, where a total of four displaced landforms was studied. Each offset feature was analyzed independently, and three different assumptions were made for all the offsets, depending on whether the age of the upper tread (upper tread reconstruction), the lower tread (lower tread reconstruction), or all bounding surfaces (intermediate solution) were used in dating of the terrace risers. The deflected geometry of the risers strongly suggests the use of either the intermediate solution or the upper tread reconstruction. The joint slip rate distributions for the upper tread reconstructions and the intermediate solutions were modeled as 13.0 + 1.8 / −1.4 and 14.3 + 5.8 / −2.4 mm/yr (2σ), respectively. Although the intermediate solution covers the full range of ages for the measured displacements, the curved geometry of the terrace risers suggests that the initiations of the riser offsets are most probably close to the abandonment ages of the upper terrace treads. Therefore, we accepted the joint slip rate of the intermediate solution but suggested that the average rate for the main displacement zone of the eastern NAF should be close to its lower limits. This slower rate with respect to previous estimates suggests that the total deformation is not only accommodated on the main displacement zone but is also distributed along the secondary faults to the south of the easternmost segments of the NAF.

The present paper presents a comparative experimental study of two commonly measured Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) signals in quartz. The experimental study measures both the continuous wave OSL (CW-OSL) and the linearly modulated (LM-OSL) signals from the same quartz sample for a range of stimulation temperatures between 180 and 280°C, while the former is transformed to pseudo LM-OSL (ps LM-OSL). A computerized deconvolution curve analysis of the LM-OSL and ps LM-OSL signals was carried out, and the contributions of several OSL components to the initial OSL signal (0.1 s) were shown to be independent of the stimulation temperature used during the measurement. It was also found that the composite OSL (0.1 s) signal consists mainly of the first two OSL components present in the OSL curves. The equivalence of the ps LM-OSL (transformed CW-OSL) and of LM-OSL measurements was also examined by an appropriate choice of the experimental stimulation times, and of the stimulation power of the blue LEDs used during the measurement.

Luminescence Ages of Feldspar Contaminated Quartz from Fluvial Terrace Sediments This study focuses on obtaining luminescence ages in feldspar contaminated quartz from well-developed fluvial terraces of the Yesilirmak (Iris) river located inside the eastern North Anatolian Fault Shear Zone (NAFZ). We applied a technique based on conventional single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol, modified with an IR pre-treatment to reduce the OSL contribution from feldspar for accurately measuring the dose in quartz. All investigated samples showed an ability to measure a beta dose given in the laboratory, a so called dose recovery test. The dependence of the equivalent dose on thermal treatment was also examined. Dose rate calculations were based on spectral analysis of gamma measurements by a field spectrometer on site. The efforts to establish a chronology using the IR modified SAR technique produced reliable dose results in stratigraphic order. Results were reproducible and grouped broadly between 35-109 ka for Bektemur, 32-36 ka for Kizilca, 19-47 ka for Aksalur and 35-44 ka for Sahinkaya. Obtained results show that the studied area was controlled by tectonic activities within the last 50 ka and the sample Aksalur 2 was the loess deposit formed by aeolian activity.

A preliminary note on depositional characteristics and optical luminescence age of a marine terrace, Strait of Çanakkale, Turkey This preliminary study investigated the depositional features and optical luminescence age of marine terrace sediments located on the east coast of the Strait of Çanakkale, Turkey. With regard to depositional setting, the studied sequence is formed mostly of shallow marine deposits rich in quartz and oysters as well as other accessory minerals and various fossil sea shells. In vertical section, the sequence is characterized by two different stratigraphic units, i.e. a 1.50-m-thick sandy to gravely bottom unit (unit A) and an overlying 2.5-m-thick fossiliferous zone (unit B). On the basis of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) age estimations obtained from six sampling levels from bottom to top, we determined superimposed cycles of deposition during interglacials from 246.47 ± 25.32 ka (unit A) at MIS 7 to 127.48 ± 8.91 ka (unit B) at MIS 5.

Micro-fabric characteristics and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating results are presented to discuss the controlling agents and timing of beachrock cementation on the fresh-water Iznik Lake shoreline. The beachrocks are made up of grain-supported polygenic conglomerate containing 20.42% carbonate with encrusted grains, basically as micrite coatings, isopachous aragonite rims, cryptocrystalline void fills and meniscus bridges. The optical ages of twelve samples yielded ages that range from 4.226±0.569 ka on the lowermost beds to 0.706±0.081 on the uppermost. This is the first report of precipitation of marine-like cements in Iznik Lake. The abundant aragonite-dominated cement is likely indicative of precipitation-prone dry evaporative conditions from the climatic optimum to the last millennia.
