Allylation of a variety of carbonyl compounds with allylic halides could be induced by Cu(II)-Mg to give corresponding homoallylic alcohols with high chemoselectivity. Cu(II)-Mg/THF-H2O was found to be an efficient reduction system of aldehyde to alcohol.

Abstract β,γ -Unsaturated nitro-alkenes have been converted into α,β -unsaturated ketones in good yield by tin(II) chloride dihydrate in tetrahedrofuran.

ABSTRACT Semicarbazones, Phenyl hydrazones, 2,4-DNP and Oxime derivatives are converted into corresponding carbonyl compounds, mostly in quantitative yield by stannous chloride–silica gel. This has general application to various nitrogeneous derivatives.

Regioselective ring opening of oxiranes has been induced by the SnCl 2 ·2H 2 O–Mg–THF/NaN 3 –H 2 O system to give the corresponding 1,2-azido alcohols in good yields.

Vinyl and allylic nitroalkenes have been converted into the corresponding carbonyl compounds in good yield using tin(II) chloride dihydrate under microwave irradiation.

Reaction of excess hydrated tin(II) chloride with 6-nitro-Δ5-steroids (1a–g) and (5) in tetrahydrofuran furnishes 5α-hydroxy-6-ketosteroids (2a–g) and (6) respectively, in good yields.

Iodotrimethylsilane generated in situ from chlorotrimethylsilane and sodium iodide effects the reduction of nitro-alkenes (1a–e) and (5) at –5 to 0 °C to furnish the ketones (2a–e) and (6) respectively as the major products.
