With the advent of Gbps-range research and engineering networks, remote multi-party collaboration systems are getting more interest. However, most existing collaboration systems are limited in providing realistic and interactive quality of user experience. This paper introduces the design of a multiparty meeting system for advanced interactive collaboration. By extending the access grid (AG) multi-party collaboration system, an interactive meeting space is envisioned to enhance the quality of user experience. Several design considerations are reviewed from the integrated view of media, networking, display, and interaction service components. Thus, a prototype framework and realization will be discussed by combining user-friendly pointing/tracking interactions, high-resolution tiled displays, hybrid multicast-based networking, and high-quality HD media services.

As the heterogeneity of end systems and their networking applications grows, networking challenges to meet the various requirements of traffics from different applications should be coped with new networking features, not possible in todays Internet. OpenFlow proposes an open programmable interface to leverage more network controllability by separating control and data path of a network device and delegating the control on the data path to a remote control point. Utilizing the deep programmability of OpenFlow, we introduce NetOpen networking services which attempt to support dynamic configuration of networking characteristics. In this paper, we explain how a NetOpen networking service is built over OpenFlow-based programmable network substrate. To validate the concept of NetOpen networking services, by taking networking connectivity as an example we show an early instantiation of NetOpen networking services over OpenFlow-based programmable network substrate.

Researchers have been proposing new protocols and services to improve performance, reliability, and scalability of the Internet. There have been several testbed platforms to test such protocols and services. In this paper, as an approach to develop a service-oriented Future Internet testbed, we discuss a preliminary design to enable programmable computing/networking and support sustainable experiments that dynamically combine distributed services.

The massive and timely delivery of media is gradually integrating itself with the dynamic composition of media-oriented services so that new types of customized media services can be created according to the diverse de- mand of end users. The resulting effective and differentiated networking support will become one of the most important requirements of the network infrastructure in the future. In this survey paper, we first present the emerging trend on the interaction of media-oriented service composition and overlay-based networks by introducing related technical issues. Then, we describe the top-down and the bottom- up approaches that coordinate service mapping using the service overlay networks (SONs) and provisioning resources for them, respectively. Finally, we examine latest research on futuristic overlay networks for service realization.

Large research programs have been launched to address both the development of Future Internet architectures as well as suitable experimental facilities for testing. Recent research activities on experimental facilities try to share resources across organizational boundaries. This paper introduces an international cooperation effort on interconnecting network substrates of two Future Internet testbed projects, FIRST@PC (Future Internet Research on Sustainable Testbed based on PC) in Korea and ORCA-BEN in United States. To build a collaborative research infrastructure available to each other, we first present how to interconnect two network substrates. We then present how we support experiments on the interconnected network substrate and show the demonstration result performed on it.

Abstract In order to explore diverse types of media-centric service composition in real environments, we have built a service-oriented testbed named as FIRST@PC (Future Internet Research on Sustainable Testbed based on PC). FIRST@PC targets a flexible and cost-effective testing environment where media-centric service compositions are flexibly realized on top of computing/networking resources. In this paper we design and implement an OMX (Open Media eXperiment for service composition) experiment control tool to support media-centric service composition. By following the SOC (service-oriented computing) paradigm, the OMX tool assists experimenters to flexibly integrate computing and networking services. To explore the possibility of media-centric service composition, we also prototype the FIRST@PC testbed consisting of multimedia computing and networking devices. The implemented OMX tool is verified by an HD media service composition scenario run on this prototyped testbed.

As the heterogeneity of end devices and their networked applications grows, networking challenges should be coped with new features to meet the various requirements of different application traffics. In this paper, based on the emerging SDN (Software-Defined Networking) paradigm, we introduce NetOpen networking services that attempt to support configurable networking with programmable networking switch nodes. Especially, we prototype a NetOpen switch node to support customized in-network processing and verify its programmability and in-network processing performance for multiple flows.

This paper introduces the software design for smart meeting space (SMeet) that enables users to collaborate with remote persons by using a wide range of devices embedded in networked meeting rooms. To enhance the quality of user experience in remote collaboration, SMeet is designed to satisfy several considerations from the integrated view of media, networking, display, and interaction services. We propose a software architecture of SMeet to flexibly associate component services to support high-quality media transport, high-resolution tiled display, and display interaction. We also present an approach to create composite services by combining component services. We explain key issues to dynamically build composite services and to integrate the service composition scheme with the proposed software architecture.

In this paper, to provide interactive tele-medical consultation, a next-generation collaboration environment is designed by bridging on-line and off-line medical services together in a place called as CMC (cyber medical center). CMC plays the base infrastructure by providing on/off-line solutions for medical information sharing. Based on the CMC model, we introduce example service scenarios that improve the effectiveness of interactive tele-medicine consultations. Then, we switch to the discussion on how to realize CMC service scenarios by employing SMeet (smart meeting space) collaboration environment. Especially, proof-of-concept verifications are successfully made to justify the potential of SMeet prototype in realizing the vision for CMC.
