This paper presents the results of the cost of energy (COE) analysis of an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant with respect to CO2 capture ratio under the climate change scenarios. To obtain process data for a COE analysis, simulation models of IGCC power plants and an IGCC with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) power plant, developed by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), have been adopted and simulated using Aspen Plus. The concept of 20-year levelized cost of energy (LCOE), and the climate change scenarios suggested by International Energy Agency (IEA) are also adopted to compare the COE of IGCC power plants with respect to CO2 capture ratio more realistically. Since previous studies did not consider fuel price and CO2 price changes, the reliability of previous results of LCOE is not good enough to be accepted for an economic comparison of IGCC power plants with respect to CO2 capture ratio. In this study, LCOEs which consider price changes of fuel and CO2 with respect to the climate change scenarios are proposed in order to increase the reliability of an economic comparison. And the results of proposed LCOEs of an IGCC without CCS power plant and IGCC with CCS (30%, 50%, 70% and 90% capture-mole basis- of CO2 in syngas stream) power plants are presented.

Traditionally, regulations, standards, codes and management systems were established after major accidents such as Seveso Directive by Seveso accident, Italy, in 1976, etc. Also, several chemical material and process accident databases were developed and implicated in the world. In this paper, we introduce a set of recently developed databases, such as eMARS (EC), HSEES (USA) and PEC-SAFER (Japan), and describe current development of a chemical accident tracking system in Korea. Especially, we intensively focused on general classification codes, simplified and effective database structure, user friendly interface and intuitional searching methods. Additionally, the chemical accident trends were analyzed by using third grade of accident casualties and property’s loss. Finally, suggestions for applicability improvement of database are proposed. To improve the management and operability of hazardous materials and chemical processes, the systemic approaches are essential using accident database. The developed database and suggested issues in this study can perform an important function in the chemical industries.

An algorithm for optimal operation of BOG (boil off gas) compressors in a LNG gasification plant is proposed in this paper, which uses an empirical BOR (boil off rate) model, a MILP (mixed integer linear programming) formulation, and a simplified dynamic tank model. Given the values for a set of process state variables, the proposed algorithm generates an optimal operation schedule for BOG compressors, which minimizes the power consumption while preparing against the potential failure of one of the operating compressors. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the conventional method in terms of safety and energy.

Abstract The sustainable process is drawing attention as the upcoming frontier and alternative works. Sustainable developments of chemical process are one of the core activities to launch the production of chemical materials in the chemical process industries. We introduce a set of indicators that can be used to measure the sustainability performance of chemical process, such as net present value, material intensity, energy intensity, CO2 capture efficiency, global warming, and inherent safety, etc. The evaluation was done by using the 6th alternative of solvents for post-compustion in CO2 capture technologies as a case study. Sustainability in chemical process design can be applied to product and process design to improve sustainable developments that is economic, environmental, and social aspects. Also, it can be considered in order to counteract multidisciplinary change such as environmental responsibility, social concerns, and economic uncertainty, etc.
