Cataloging monographic serial analytics: From feast to famine

Nancy L. Pelzer

Abstract Analyzing serial issues of a monographic nature as a mechanism for connecting users to topical content has been a longstanding practice at the Iowa State University Library. Although studies have shown that monographic analysis of selected journal issues is a method of providing access to topical issues that citation databases often do not provide, the labor cost in providing original cataloging for some of these issues remains high. This article details the rationale and decision making that resulted in the implementation of a new process for reducing the amount of monographic analysis that is provided for uniquely titled journal issues.

Library use and information-seeking behavior of veterinary medical students revisited in the electronic environment.

159.95. , edited by Gustavo F. Gutiérrez-López and Gustavo V. Barbosa-Cánovas Nature Biotechnology (http://biotech.nature.com) defines biotechnology as the industrial use of living organisms (or parts of living organisms) to produce foods, drugs, or other products. The older areas of biotechnology include fermentation and plant and animal hybridization, while the newer biotechnologies range from protein separation technologies to genomics and proteomics. In this 338-page work on food science and biotechnology, part of the Food Preservation Technology series, the authors state that the purpose of the text is to present a meaningful and up-to-date review of how food science and biotechnology interact and to describe procedures and techniques that are used in food biotechnology. Although the book’s fourteen chapters deal with a wide variety of techniques used in biomolecular engineering, protein engineering, molecular informatics and applications of molecular biotechnology to improve plant nutritional and functional quality, the editor’s lofty goals are hindered by the work reading like a compilation of research articles with uneven coverage of the subject matter. However, the three chapters by Osuna-Castro, Hernandez-Sanchez and Rodriguez–which introduce molecular food biotechnology, recent BOOK AND INTERNET REVIEWS
