Abstract Very stable iminomethylenephosphine (3) and ethenylidenephosphine (4) were obtained by steric protection with the 2,4,6-tri-tertbutylphenyl group and some of the spectroscopic data are described.

Abstract E -Benzylidene- P -2,4,6-tri- t -butylphenylphosphine containing phosphorus in low coordination state was irradiated to give the corresponding Z -isomer: both isomers were isolated and characterized and the reactions with chromium(O) carbonyls were described.

Abstract The X-ray analyses of sterically protected E- and Z-2-phenyl-1-(2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl) phosphaethylenes (E-1 and Z-1) were carried out and the structures in the crystal are discussed.

Abstract Addition of dihalocarbenes to a diphosphene gave diphosphiranes which undergo rearrangement on treatment with alkyllithium reagents to afford 1,3-diphospha-allene; dynamic NMR studies on the allene are described.

Abstract 2,3-Dihydro-1H-phosphindole derivatives were obtained from thermal reactions of (2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)phosphonous dichloride in refluxing toluene, probably through cyclization involving phosphorus radicals with an adjacent methyl of o-tert-butyl groups.

The diphospha-allene, P,P′bis(2,4,6-tri-butylphenyl)-1,3-diphospha-allene (3), was isolated and characterised as a stable compound for the first time.

Abstract 2,6-Di-t-butylbromobenzene ( 5 ) was prepared from 2,4,6-tri-t-butyl-bromobenzene by ipso nitration followed by reduction of the nitro group and deamination. The diphosphene ( 8 ) and 1,3-diphosphaallene ( 10 ) were prepared.
