Abstract Our objective was to eliminate the harmful effect of paint films in recycled material. Our study focused on the molecular bonding in paint resin, and reached the following conclusions: 1. (1) The use of a modifier allows the ether linkage in the paint film to be cleaved and its molecular structure changed. This resulted in improved compatibility between the paint and the material, rendering the paint film chips harmless. 2. (2) Bumpers molded using modified recycled material meet requirements for mechanical properties, moldability, paintability and surface quality. 3. (3) A continuous process where modification and pelletization are done simulataneously in a twin-screw extruder was achieved. This reduces the number of process steps and processing time, while providing improved productivity and economies.

Abstract Application of Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) to exterior body panels of automobiles is intended to meet the demand for weight reduction. There has, on the other hand, always been a strong demand for metal plating exterior body panels, which is especially true for the domestic truck market. However, metal plating on SMC with good adhesion and surface quality has not been possible with conventional technology. In order to meet these needs, the technique of metal plating on SMC by changing in In-Mold Coating was developed.

Application of Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) to exterior body panels of automobiles is intended to meet weight reduction demands. There has always been a strong demand for metal plating exterior body panels, which is especially true for the domestic truck market. However, metal plating on SMC with excellent adhesion and surface quality has never been attained with the technology heretofore in use. In order to meet such needs, the metal plating technique on SMC by changing the components in in-mold coating has been developed.
