The paper deals with the supervisory control used in a Vehicle System Controller (VSC) of a Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). A description of the torque distribution algorithm that determines the prorated amount of torque demanded of each of the tractive devices to meet the drivers demand and the energy management scheme is given. The PHEV hybrid operating modes and PHEV dynamic model are presented and simulation results are shown depicting the seamless transitions from one hybrid mode to another as coordinated by this supervisory controller.

We address concerns relating to building real-time executable software models to simulate the dynamics of an induction motor driving a vehicle. Using an example, we investigate how the selection of a reference frame influences the ability to simulate the induction motor dynamics in real-time. We also investigate the possible advantages of a state transition matrix based approach over the standard simulation techniques based on Euler integration.

Powertrain and vehicle control systems are rapidly becoming extremely sophisticated. In order to maintain product technology competitiveness, minimize product and control system complexity, and contain development costs and timing, correspondingly more sophisticated control system development tools and methodologies are required. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation technology offers promise to bridge the challenging gap between system modeling and actual prototype system hardware implementation. This paper contains a discussion of some of the principal analytically related issues associated with a HIL powertrain laboratory.
