The development of Web 2.0 and social software applications was not initially aimed for education, but its influence in this field, especially in e-learning, is recently recognized as positive. New approach to e-learning inspired by these technologies is called e-learning 2.0. It emphasizes social learning using different tools available on the web rather then integrated systems like LMSs. nThis paper describes framework for further development of adaptive LMS according to constructivist theory of learning, advantages of Web 2.0 applications and characteristics of e-learning 2.0.

Scalability is an important property of every large-scale recommender system. In order to ensure smooth user experience, recommendation algorithms should be optimized to work with large amounts of user data. This paper presents the optimization approach used in the development of the E-learning activities recommender system (ELARS). The recommendations for students and groups in ELARS include four different types of items: Web 2.0 tools, collaborators (colleague students), optional e-learning activities, and advice. Since implemented recommendation algorithms depend on prediction of students’ preferences, algorithm that computes predictions was offloaded to graphics processing unit using NVIDIA CUDA heterogeneous parallel programming platform. This offload increases performance significantly, especially with large number of students using the system.

This paper presents research on implementing educational recommendation strategy, designed to provide personalization during moderated e-courses. Aimed at increasing students academic results, the strategy includes recommendations that support students and groups while selecting between offered optional e-tivities, collaborators and Web 2.0 tools. In addition, advice regarding quantitative aspect of students and groups contributions during e-tivities is provided. The strategy proved to be effective in a sense that students who received recommendations achieved better academic results in e-course.
