While iTV content is aimed at human manipulation, it does not appropriately support the performance of computational processes, such as search engines. The principal problem is that the meaning of multimedia documents cannot be explored, reducing the actuation limit of services and applications. In this context, this project proposes the definition of a semantic layer to the iTV platform, based on the Semantic Web concepts, which organizes its content and offers intelligent services, such as semantic queries and recommendation. Thus, this project tries to avoid the same problems that are currently presented by the Web platform, following the Semantic Web trend and increasing the potential to the development of more advanced applications. This technology is being developed in accordance with the Ginga project, which is the official specification for the Brazilian iTV middleware.

In the last decades, many advances have been made in intelligent planning systems. Significant improvements related to core problems, providing faster search algorithms and shortest plans have been proposed. However, there is a lack in researches allowing a better support for a proper use and interaction with planners, where, for instance, visualization can play an important role. This work proposes a way to address the problem of visualization in intelligent planning systems via a more general approach. It consists in an integrated ontology set and reasoning mechanism for multi-modality visualisation destined to collaborative planning environments. This framework will permit organizing and modeling the domain from the visualization perspective, and give a tailored support for presentation of information.

Home-based health monitoring systems are currently being used to support early detection of abnormal conditions and prevention of its serious consequences. Many patients can benefit from continuous ambulatory monitoring as a part of a diagnostic procedure, optimal maintenance of a chronic condition or during supervised recovery from an acute event or surgical procedure. An evolution of this approach is the use of the mobile infrastructure and wearable technology, which mainly provides more freedom to their users. While these approaches use mobile communication devices just as a router of health information, we argue that such devices can make use of reasoning mechanisms so that they can take decisions and provide a better health care support to their users. This paper discusses the specification of a deductive health monitoring system, where its components are represented by assistant agents running in mobile devices and using a low cost wireless communication protocol (SMS) to exchange knowledge with a central root. Requirements for communication protocol and agent reasoning, based on a production system, are shown in details together with some practical experiments.

This paper analyses aspects associated with the development of joint human-agent planning agents, showing that they can be implemented, in a unified way, via a constraint-based ontology and related functions. The constraints’ properties have already been used by several planning approaches as an option to improve their efficiency and expressiveness. This work demonstrates that such properties can also be employed to implement collaborative concepts, which are maintained transparent to the planning mechanisms. Furthermore, the use of constraints provides several facilities to the implementation of advanced mechanisms associated with the human interaction, as also demonstrated here.

Facing the need to improve access to knowledge and the establishment of means for sharing and organizing data in the health domain, this research describes an architecture based on the paradigm of Knowledge-as-a-Service (KaaS) for knowledge sharing in the health domain, and, through the use of OWL queries, it’s demonstrated how such architecture can be used for clinical decision support, together with its flow of execution. Additionally, it is shown a case study of the instantiation of the purposed architecture in the field of nephrology. The development of this research contributed to the creation of a new architecture, called H-KaaS, which established itself as a platform capable of managing multiple data sources and knowledge models, centralizing access to ontologies and other means of knowledge representation through an API that can be instantiated to different purposes, such as clinical decision support and education.

The electric motors of the trains in a railway system are powered by electricity, and the energy demand is high. In addition, rail-based transport systems continue to grow, and therefore, solutions are currently sought to optimise energy consumption. This article presents an analysis of electric multiple units (EMUs) of the Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos — Brazilian Urban Train Company (CBTU) — Recife, Brazil and the use of electric power provided by the engines during acceleration and braking. To this end, a general model is proposed that encompasses an analysis of the speed and driving profiles, herein termed speed profile optimisation. This model is validated by empirical simulations with the aid of MATLAB software and the implementation of a genetic algorithm of artificial intelligence using the Java programming language. We intend to demonstrate that by controlling the train speed profiles and considering some limits, restrictions and parameters, a decrease in energy consumption in the analysed stations will follow, which will promote more sustainable transport and cost savings.

The emergence of the Interactive Digital TV iDTV is improving the transmission quality and making available new features and services to the user. With the advent of digital convergence between TV and web platforms, new proposals of semantic organisation of content are being developed, introducing concepts of Semantic Web and knowledge representation that allow semantic description of metadata content through ontologies. This paper proposes a component for finding domains and expansion of multimedia metadata in broadcast DTV based on the Semantic Web concepts and analysis of lexical and semantic similarity, integrated with knowledge TV platform.

he emerging scenario of interactive Digital TV (iDTV) is promoting the increase of interactivity in the communication process and also in audiovisual production, thus raising the number of channels and resources available to the user. This reality makes the task of finding the desired content becoming a costly and possibly ineffective action. The incorporation of recommender systems in the iDTV environment is emerging as a possible solution to this problem. This work aims to propose a hybrid approach to content recommendation in iDTV, based on data mining techniques, integrated to the Semantic web concepts, allowing structuring and standardization of data and consequently making possible sharing of information, providing semantics and automated reasoning. For the proposed service it is considered the Brazilian Digital TV System (SBTVD) and the middleware Ginga. A prototype has been developed and experiments carried out with NetFlix database. As results, it was obtained an average accuracy of 30% using only the data mining technique. On the other hand, the evaluation including semantic rules obtained an average accuracy of 35%.

Testing is one of the most time-consuming phases of the software development cycle and this is not different in the mobile software domain. In fact, small input mechanisms, dependence to wireless network configurations and complex navigations create a very stressful and prone to errors test environment. This paper presents additional modules that were specified to a test management tool, which extend its abilities in terms of automation, intelligent control and statistical metrics manipulation. We compare this approach to other efforts from the software engineering community and stress the gains in our test process. A list of learned lessons was also consolidated to share important points of this experience.
