A foreign policy guided by a commitment to prophetic politics would attempt to achieve specific values (life, peace, human rights and social justice, economic well‐being, ecological health, and human excellence) universally; would examine critically the institution of the nation‐state; would seek breakthroughs to narrow the gap between professed values and policy performance; and would anticipate both difficulties and opportunities in the future. Prophetic politics recognizes that states have vital interests to protect but argues that national interests increasingly tend to coincide with global concerns. Although there are factors which constrain strongly the realization of these goals (the dominance of the nation‐state, the primal objective of protecting national interests, and the existence of the war system), the potential exists, given prophetic leadership, to mobilize public support for a U.S. foreign policy based on prophetic values and practices.
