Alkaloids isolated from Crinum species have been reviewed for the period 1985-2000. Non-nitrogenous compounds have been surveyed for the first time. Botanical classification and biological activity are discussed. Spectral data literature sources are listed.

Abstract A new iridoid glucoside, majoroside, along with the known aucubin have been isolated from Plantago major from Bulgaria and Mongolia. Majoroside is the first Δ 8 -iridoid glucoside. The structure was established on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic studies.

A GC-MS analysis of underivatized alkaloids from leaves of Crinum latifolium was performed. From the identified 15 alkaloids, 9 were found for the first time in this plant. Almost all alkaloids belonged to the crinane type. Substantial changes in the methylation and oxidation pattern of the alkaloids at and after flowering were observed

Abstract A new valepotriate (VII) has been isolated from Valeriana officinalis roots and its structure and stereochemistry determined. Comparison with didrovaltrate is made and a correction of its C-1 configuration proposed.

Abstract The new iridoid 10-acetylmonomelittoside and the known iridoid glucosides aucubin and monomelittoside were isolated from fresh leaves of two varieties of Plantago media. This is the first isolation of monomelittoside from Plantaginaceae.

Abstract Five C10 iridoid glycosides (shanzhiside methyl ester, lamalbide, lamiide, sesamoside, and 5‐desoxysesamoside) were examined by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS). Considerable differences were observed in positive ion and negative ion mode. Only the positive ion spectra were useful for molecular mass determination on the basis of molecular alkali metal adducts, with the exception of two iridoids containing all 5β‐OH, 7β‐OH and 8β‐OH groups. Fragment characteristics for distinct functionalities were observed. Chelation studies of each iridoid with three different alkali metals were also conducted.

Abstract Volatile constituents of Crinum latifolium L. leaves, collected at and after flowering, were analyzed using GC/M S. Thirty-two components were identified. Differences in the chemical profile at different ontogenetic stages were observed.

In vitro a one-step selection for glyphosate tolerance of two Bulgarian tobacco cultivars Zlatna Arda and Nevrokop A24 was carried out. After treatment with glyphosate of the control plants and their regenerants polyphenol and alkaloid changes were determined. A decrease in the polyphenol concentrations and an increase in the alkaloid concentrations were registered only for Zlatna Arda.
