UNLABELLED Few studies have addressed early cerebrovascular lethality in Brazil. OBJECTIVE To evaluate 10 and 28-day stroke case-fatality rates in three hospitals in three Brazilian cities. METHODS We described the stroke registries in São Paulo, João Pessoa, and Natal. RESULTS Out of a total of 962 first-ever events (mean age, 68.1 years-old; 53% men), 83.6% (804 cases) were classified as ischemic and 16.4% (158) as hemorrhagic stroke. Overall, the case-fatality rates and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for hemorrhagic stroke events were higher than for ischemic events, both at 10 (12.3%; 95%CI 7.2-17.4 versus 7.0%; 95%CI 5.3-8.8) and at 28 days (19.8%; 95%CI 13.6-26.0 versus 11.1%; 95%CI 8.9-13.3). CONCLUSIONS We did not find any substantial differences in early case-fatality rates according to stroke subtypes, when comparing the three centers.

The purposes of this study were 1) to verify the relationship between hand-eye-foot laterality and spatial organization deficit in schoolchildren, and 2) to categorize the variations in laterality in this population. The sample comprised 400 children aged 6-10 from public and private schools in Joao Pessoa (Paraiba state, Brazil). Laterality and spatial organization were assessed using the Harris Test of Lateral Dominance and the Piaget-Head Battery, respectively. The results demonstrated 23 types of hand-eye-foot laterality, with the highest proportion (48.75%) showing pure dextrality (right-handedness, right-eyedness and right-footedness). Pure sinistrality was significantly (p<0.05) associated with spatial organization deficit. The results point to the importance of implementing motor stimulation programs which focus on childrens laterality and spatial organization during the daily school routine, as a means to preventing and intervening in distortions in their learning process.

Introduction: Children with neuromotor changes are challenged daily, and such challenges may be faced with the help of a caregiver. Thus, the functional dependence of these children lead to the daily demands, causing physical and emotional distress, which affect the quality of life of their caregiver. Objective: Analyze the sociodemographic indicators that interfere with the level of life quality of the caregivers of children with neuromotor changes. Method: 50 caregivers of children with neuromotor changes were interviewed at the Association of Parents and Friends of the Exceptional (APAE) of Paraiba, on the city of Joao Pessoa. To evaluate the quality of life, the questionnaire SF-36 was used, in addition to collecting demographic data (sex, age, degree of kinship, marital status, number of children, school level and religion). For the data analysis, a descriptive study was developed, the normality test of Shapiro-Wilk was realized, followed by the inferential analysis with non-parametric correlation of Spearman, considering the significant value α = 0,05. Results: There was a predominance of the female sex (96%) with medium age of ≥ 39 years old. Correlating the sociodemographic indicators with the level of life quality of the SF-36 of the caregivers, only the vitality domain presented significance with the variables: number of children (p=0,012), benefits (p=0,044), and how the transfer of the child is done (p=0,044). There was no significant difference relating the sociodemographic indicators on the other domains. Conclusion: The knowledge of sociodemographic indicators that interfere with the quality of life shows the importance of preventive measures, such as guidance and, if needed, treatment for improvement of possible grievances.

Objective: This study examined the sociodemographic profile and work perception according to workers with and without physical disabilities in the Federal University of Paraiba (Campus I), Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 26 employees categorized into two groups, 50% of Workers with Disabilities (WD) and 50% of Workers without Disabilities (WWD). We used the Sociodemographic and work perception questionnaire (compiled by and adapted through the ANACT method). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics on SPSS version 19.0. Results: Both groups were comprised mostly of women: 53.8% (WD) and 69.2% (WWD). The WD predominated in the age group 50-59 years (38.5%), unlike the WWD that were found predominantly in the group 20-29 years (53.8%). The majority was married: 46.2% (WD) and 53.8% (WWD); the education level as a specialist was 38.5% and 30.8% for the WD and WWD groups, respectively. As to the work perception, most WD (69.2%) and WWD (53.8%) referred to work as being important; with regard to the end of the workday, WD reported tiredness (46,2%), while WWD had no complaints (69.2%). Conclusion: The results suggest that WD give more value to their work, although they refer to an uncomfortable feeling (tiredness), suggesting the conduction of further studies in order to provide these workers with preventive and health promotion measures. DESCRIPTORS: Physical disability. Occupational Health. Work Capacity Evaluation.
