A requirements catalog for mobile learning environments

Nemésio Freitas Duarte Filho; Ellen Francine Barbosa

Mobile learning (m-learning) can be characterized by the ability to promote a strong interaction among apprentices and tutors, assuring greater motivation, convenience and flexibility to the learning process. Mobile learning environments have emerged in this context as a way to support the m-learning initiatives. However, despite their relevance, there is no complete and well-defined set of requirements for such systems. Motivated by this scenario, in this paper we present a requirements catalog for mobile learning environments. The catalog was established from the results of a systematic review conducted in this domain. Additionally, based on the knowledge of domain specialists, the requirements were prioritized to reflect the main experiences, needs and constraints regarding the m-learning development. The catalog adopts a three-level hierarchical structure, in which the main criteria, characteristics and requirements of m-learning environments are defined and detailed.

A contribution to the quality evaluation of mobile learning environments

Nemésio Freitas Duarte Filho; Ellen Francine Barbosa

In recent years, issues related to teaching and learning have been more and more discussed and investigated by the scientific community. Mobile learning (m-learning) environments, despite the benefits provided, are still considered as new and incipient products. Among the limitations observed in the construction and adoption of such environments, we highlight the lack of specific quality guidelines to allow an adequate evaluation of them. In short, the planning and execution of a systematic evaluation among m-learning environments can ease their selection and adoption by apprentices, tutors and educational organizations. Motivated by this scenario, in this paper we propose a process for the quality evaluation of mobile learning environments. To validate our ideas, we have applied the proposed process in the quality evaluation of a set of m-learning environments. The promising results achieved suggest the feasibility of adopting the process for quality evaluation purposes in the m-learning domain.

Nemésio Freitas Duarte Filho; Ellen Francine Barbosa

The keynotes goal is to reflect on emergent opportunities for human Discovery (in science), Creativity (in art & industry), and Learning (in education) as processes often occurring serendipitously in individuals and in communities empowered by dynamic Web connections in the global village. These reflections seem to fit best with the mandate of the CBIE Conference: sustainable education. In this talk I will elaborate on the development, implementation and evaluation of the use of online tools for learning, with special attention to games and gamification, sharing and collaboration.

A contribution to the adoption of software product lines in the development of mobile learning applications

Venilton Falvo; Nemésio Freitas Duarte Filho; Edson Oliveira; Ellen Francine Barbosa

The increasing presence of mobile devices in the society has motivated the use of these gadgets in several segments. This reality has contributed to the emergence of a new and innovative modality of learning - the mobile learning, or simply, m-learning. In short, mobile learning is based on the use of a set of specific mobile applications, which possesses similar features and specific characteristics according to the learning goals. In a different but related perspective, the emerging reuse technique of Software Product Line (SPL) allows mass customization and systematic derivation of products, such as mobile learning applications. Motivated by this scenario, we have worked on the establishment of M-SPLearning, a SPL to the mobile learning applications domain. M-SPLearning has been developed throughout a proactive adoption model, according to the basics of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). In this paper, we discuss the main aspects of the development of M-SPLearning, focusing on the implementation phase. Also, as a case study, we illustrate two products generated by the SPL proposed. The main results obtained suggest the practical feasibility of adopting M-SPLearning in the development of mobile learning applications.

A Contribution to the Establishment of Reference Architectures for Mobile Learning Environments

Nemésio Freitas Duarte Filho; Ellen Francine Barbosa

The development and the use of learning environments, coupled with the evolution of mobile computing, have contributed significantly to the establishment of a new learning modality known as mobile learning (m-learning). In this new scenario, the educational environments, despite having many benefits and facilities with regard to teaching and learning, have problems and challenges that need to be addressed. One of the important aspects to be investigated concerns the establishment and adoption of architectural patterns. In fact, most of these environments are built in an isolated form, having their own architectures and structures, which may negatively impact the ability of standardization and support of architectural definition. The main goal of this paper is to investigate and define a service-oriented reference architecture for m-learning environments. The proposed architecture, named Ref-mLearning, aims to contribute to the evolution, reuse, and interoperability of such environments, enabling an increase in quality and cost reduction during their development, due to the use of features provided by service-oriented architecture. Ref-mLearning was also evaluated through qualitative and quantitative aspects: 1) in comparison with a reference architecture model and 2) with the support of specialists. The results showed that the proposed architecture comprises relevant elements with respect to a service-oriented reference architecture.

A service-oriented reference architecture for mobile learning environments

Nemésio Freitas Duarte Filho; Ellen Francine Barbosa

Even providing several benefits and facilities with regard to teaching and learning, the development of mobile learning environments present problems and challenges that must be investigated, especially with respect to the definition and adoption of architectural patterns. Indeed, most of these environments are built in an isolated way, having their own architectures and structures, which can negatively affect the capacity to standardization and support of architectural definition. Motivated by this scenario, in this paper we propose a service-oriented reference architecture for mobile learning environments. This architecture, named Ref-mLearning, aims at contributing to the development, reuse and interoperability of such environments, also allowing an increase in quality and cost reduction during their development. Ref-mLearning was developed according to a systematic process for the definition of reference architectures, and has been evaluated by means of a reference model for reference architectures. The preliminary results obtained suggest that Ref-mLearning is complete, presenting most of the relevant elements with respect to a reference architecture.
